My 8 month old oriental neutered boy is very particular about his toileting.
He and my 20 month old spayed Siamese female are indoor cats and have numerous litter trays.
The female has always been fastidious about her toileting and he used the tray for the first two months of living with us.
From about 4-5 months old he seeks out clean clothes piles such as my ironing pile to wee on. If I or my son leaves a bag or case open in his presence(particularly if it contain something soft or fabric like) he'll urinate in it.
I have tried popping litter trays in areas that he has wet items to see if its an area thing.
When I cleaned the trays one day he popped unnoticed in to the open bag of fresh litter to squat and take a wee so I thought that cleanliness was his issue.
I tried cleaning all trays fully every morning and every night and removing poo whenever it appears. This is costing me an awful lot.
I purchased another tray of a non enclosed style in case the type of tray was the problem.
I have bough a wood pellet litter to try along side the cat-o-let that we have used in the past.
He gets on well with our female, they play fight but spend hours grooming and sleeping together. He hasn't experienced any upset other than his initial introduction to my home in February, he was using his tray completely every time at that stage.
He still prefers to sneak on to clean clothes. A good point is that I'm now moving my ironing items straight away as I have washed most clothe items 3 or 4 times now.
My son filled the clean trays the other morning and a little of the clean wood litter scattered onto the floor, I stood on it with bare feet and it was awful to stand on. I then tried the cat-o-let underfoot too it wasn't much better. It made me wonder if that's why he's choosing to go for a lovely, fabric soft spot.
I have since tried to come up with a soft litter solution but its difficult to know as it means buying a big bag to try.
Can anyone suggest a good one? soft on paws and maybe clumping?
I even considered potting compost, but unsure as to whether anything is added to it that may harm the cat's.
Hope someone can help.
