Please can anybody help me with this problem. I have a 10 month old birman kitten that I had injected for fleas about a month ago and since then she is barely eating enough to keep herself alive! I did not realise that there were possible side effects with this vaccine and had relied on my vet to advise me if there were. When she was being vaccinated I quickly decided that because she was in a great deal of discomfort, that I would never have it done again. She has always been a fussy eater but it quickly got a lot worse. I have since found out that one of the side effects is anorexia and I believe that this is what has happened. I have bought her loads of different food to try, fed her from my hands, tried to make her eat by throwing bits of her food on the floor to turn it into a game, steamed fish, chopped liver, the list of things ive tried goes on and on but I feel that I am making no headway with this problem. I took her back to my vet about 2 weeks ago just to get her checked out and was told that she seemed ok, that was before I found out about the possible side effects. I hope that someone can offer me a glimmer of hope as I am running out of things to try and am feeling very worried. Thank you in advance for any help that you can give.

Hi lilysmum You may want to copy this post and post down on the Cat Board as quite a few of the cat people do not read the general Board, someone may come along sooner then with help and advice. This help thread is mainly for computer problems. Good Luck. Sorry I can not offer any advice as I am a dog owner x

Hi lilysmum, this must be so worrying for you. I don't know of the vaccine but you've obviously researched it. As to your kitten, is she losing weight? If so I would definitely speak to the vet again. As to getting her to eat, try warming her food, only slightly though, so that it smells more. Also things like sardines or pilchards in tomato sauce can help as they are strong smelling. I'll post a link to the is thread on the cat area of the forum.

Thankyou so much for your replies, yes I am extremely worried about this. Apparently this vaccine has been around for years and I had never heard about it either. It was only when I had a money off voucher from my vet that I thought that it sounded like a good idea, I was so wrong!. My kitten was extremely poorly shortly after I had her, stress I imagine, with moving to a new home, she ended up within 48 hours extremely constipated, high temperature and on a drip. It was touch and go for a week and I thought she would die but she pulled through in the end. She seldom drinks so constipation is an ongoing problem, subsequently numerous trips to t he vet, which she now hates and which I try to avoid as she has been through so much in her short life. I have tried warming her food and have had high nutrition food from vet, she just seems like she doesn't want to eat and I am at a complete loss.

Hi Lilysmum. I also have a female kitten (10 months) that doesn't appear to eat. However she is quick and lively (more so than the boys) so I paid a lot of attention to her and found that she is almost exclusively eating dried AT NIGHT. She eats raw chicken, a few mouthfuls of wet food and whole bowls (60gms) of Royal Canines FUSSY food (33?). You can get trial sizes of Royal Canine for about £2 from pet shops.

lilysmum like tonib said I would get a nice smelly food so wet cat food and heat up slightly to release the smell or may be sardines etc and feed little and often. Warm chicken is popular in this house. I would also leave kibble out at night like camorris suggested. I know it's worrying but I wouldn't keep swapping and changing the food, choose something that she has shown an interest in and stick with it. Good luck and keep us posted.

So sorry to hear that your cat has suffered in this way. My 6 year old Maine coon Kiba-Khan has suffered with constipation since he was a kitten. I give him lactulose and Perridale in with his food. Recently he wouldn't eat or drink and became severely constipated and had to have an enema. You could try a 5ml spoonful of lactulose (from chemist) on your kitten's food once a day and this should help. I have cut down on my cat's dried food as he was eating lots of it and this made the constipation worse. As he is like your kitten and seldom drinks I now add water to his wet food and then I put a few dried biscuits on the top. I also have a syringe and somtimes squirt a little water into the side of his mouth if I think he hasn't beem drinking enough. As suggested by camorris I think it is a good idea to try Royal Canins' fussy eater range.
