Hello all, recently I've noticed that the pads on Rio's paws seem very rough and quite hard. This morning while I was checking them a bit flaked off. Is there anything you can put on them to heal/prevent this? I'm thinking get some socks for when he's out on walks? Any ideas/ recommendations for what might help? Does anyone know what the cause may be?

Have you been going on lots of path walks? Also beach walks with lots of stones and pebbles can cause paws to be rough. Even the sea salt can effect the skin on dogs paws. Vaseline can help protect the paws from salt and will give them a protective barrier against things on walks. But will also help collect dirt and sand while out on walks, so will have to be wiped off when you get back home. I think I also saw something in Pets@home to protect paws but that might have been for the colder months of the year and to help in ice and snow?? Paw Wax is the available but again I'm not sure if that's more for slippery conditions. Edit to add:- A product like this might help to sooth and heal him paws - Paw Protection cream
There are a few out there so have a search and see if there is a better one or one for less.

Yeah i'll have to look around. I've got some vaseline so i'll stick some of that on then have a look see whats around at pets@home. We don't do a lot of path walking mainly beach or field but none of the places we go seem to be stoney. It has been quite cold out some days so maybe that hasn't helped. I'm going to the vets on Thursday so i can ask him what he thinks. Thanks Gladys

aston did you see I edited and added a link? That product helps to heal paws but also protects from further sores on paws. Might be worth a look.

Hi aston, I was listening to an interview with Anna Webb of The Barking Blondes (don't know if you've heard of them?) the other day and she mentioned that her English Bull Terrier suffered from hard, flaky paws and she's started giving a biotin supplement that apparently works wonders. Maybe this is something you could ask your vet about when you go. www.petsathome.com/shop/dr.-clauders-repair-plus-biotin-tablets-200g-112701I've just googled biotin and it's benefits for dogs and there are people who are for and against it, of course, so I'd say you should do a bit of research into it first
