Hi Everyone... Im from Hampshire and have just adopted an 8 week old male kitten called Boo from a lady who could not keep him anymore. I must say i have never had a cat myself so the whole experience is new to me... I do however already have a Doberman called Lexi, 7 Chickens a turtle and a few fish... My husband and my 2 beautiful children I have been reading the forum and found out some great tips already... How ever i do have one question i would like all you experienced people to help me with please... When i got Boo he was on Whiskers Kitten wet food and seems to eat it well, but when i took him to the vets for a kitten check she advised me to buy Royal Canin Pediatric Weaning dry food, which i did. Now i have started giving him the dry mixed with the wet and he does seem to be eating it with out a problem. But i wanted to know if i should stop the wet food altogether as the vet advised or keep mixing wet and dry together? I have read alot online and it seems alot of people think wet food is better... I would just like some advice please... Thank you for reading my post... Hope to hear from you all soon xx

Hi welcome to the forum. May I just ask was it from that vet that you bought the food? Sometimes they will encourage you to buy their food because they get commission on it. What a lot of people do is have dry food available full time and only give wet food at specific meal times. Wet food tends to contain less grain that dry food, which is good as grain is largely indigestible by cats and only serves as a 'filler' (cats are obligate carnivores). Some avoid wet food because dry is more convenient but wet food is helpful is your cat doesn't drink a lot. When I got 2 of my cats as kittens they got the Whiskas kitten food, both wet & dry, and later on we gave them the Royal Canin Kitten food. Good luck with your new kitten.

Hello and welcome to you and your furry family! ;0 As for the foods. Generally, Whiskas is a poor quality food, the meat content is only around 4% per pouch. However I think this is acceptable if you wish to feed a good quality dry food along with it, something like Applaws (80% meat content). Royal Canin is often pushed by vets, as they get the perks of selling expensive bags of food, when in actual fact, although its better than some, its not a great deal better. Do you have an Amazon account, or are you able to get to Pets at Home? This is the Applaws food... www.petsathome.com/shop/adult-cat-food-chicken-and-salmon-2kg-29207I know if might seem expensive at the moment, but that's 100 days worth of food for the average sized cat, so only costing 13p per day to feed Even less if you feed a pouch of Whiskas along with it. You can buy the kitten version of Applaws.

Hi welcome to the forum. May I just ask was it from that vet that you bought the food? Hi judypops, Yes it was the vet and she went and got the food off of the shelf and showed me it and told me loads of benefits of using it. I will look into a better wet food i was using this one as he was on it when i bought him and didnt want to upset his little tummy to much. Thank you both for your reply xx

Despite it's benefits to be honest it's not the best food. Applaws like sarahhound suggested is better in my opinion. I tried it with one of my lot but he didn't take to it. all other reviews are great. Hope you stay on the forum.

Hi Zina, welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy it here. We'll look forward to hearing more about all your pets. Congratulations on taking on a kitten, hope Boo integrates well into your household, I bet your children already love her (kittens seem to have that effect on people ) I'm Toni with 4 rescue cats aged 4-14. Unfortunately I've no experience of kittens & what should be fed when, but I know others on the forum are so hopefully you'll get plenty of advice. All I can say we feed our cats both wet & dry in varying proportions, one gets mainly dried with a little moist to put her meds in, one gets all moist (he considers dry food, including cat treats, the spawn of the devil!), the other 2 have dried with one or 1/2 a pouch with each meal depending on the size of the cat!! As regards dry, we use Hills for the cat on the diet, James WellBelloved for the other 2 (as one has a sensitive stomach & Royal Canin doesn't seem to agree with her) but with a Royal Canin in the mix for the other at night as he likes it & Lexie is in her own room overnight. Ours weren't over keen on the Applaws but I would agree with sarahhound that the product has good ingredients. As to moist we use Felix & Applaws (which isn't a complete food in its wet form), Gourmet Gold & Sheba, depending on the needs & likes of the individual cats, which can vary for day to day!!! Probably not much help to you now though - sorry. However, the main thing is the better the food you put into the kitten the healthier & fitter cat it is likely to grow into.

Hi Zina welcome to you and your furry friends. As others have said, vets tend to push products they have in their surgeries as they get a back-hander for it. The only time we have done this ourselves is when our Lucky (now sadly passed away) contracted CRF and had to have special dry food for it. They did try to get us to buy the special diet food-which we did. Lucky wouldn't even touch it and after going back to the vet with it they were reluctant to give us a refund...but after some stiff persuasion, they were left with no choice. Our Gypsy has a variety of wet foods which she gets twice a day and always has dry food on tap through out the day to keep the wee fattie going.

Thank you tonib and tingler for your reply's. I have been looking online for some better wet food as at the moment im going to use the royal canin dry as the bag is open and he is eating it. I have found HiLife tempt me Kitten pouches which has 50% chicken in... this seems better to me as whiskers only has 4% meat. So would this be a better choice for me to feed him? I must say kitten/cat labelling is quite confusing... i have been looking online at loads of sites and some i cant even find out how much meat % they have in but this HiLife is from pets at home so can get some of this quite easily
Thank you all for your help... I will try and post a picture of my lil man soon ... I did try and put a picture of him as my profile picture but it keeps saying my pictures are to high on MB... so im not sure how to do it ... I will try and work it out xx

Hi zina, I would try doing what your vet advises. If it doesn't go well, or to plan, go in and talk to your vet and tell him/her. You could try uploading pictures via Photobucket (register here - secure.photobucket.com/register ) Then save the PB photos you uploaded to your computer, AFTER resizing them down under the MB limit (it tells you this when you try to upload a profile photo). Then try uploading or putting the PB link into your avatar box, and see if that works IT HAS TO B THE CORRECT SIZE HOWEVER. If you would like you can PM me the photos and I can try and sort them out on PB and give them back to you.

zina, 1MB max for avatars. 150px by 150px recommended Supported formats: .gif .jpeg .jpg .png Or Link an image staring with http:// By uploading or linking an image you hereby agree that it does not violate the ProBoards Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, or the rights of any 3rd party. They are the basic rules. I would try putting your photo at 150 Width and 199 height? When I do this to my own photos it looks about avatar size. If it doesn't work then the member scallywag is more technical than me!! Try hovering your mouse over the photo you wish to use as your avatar on your computer (NOT Photobucket, ideally on your computer) and see if it tells you any size/type details. Then compare them to the rules of avatar photo size. If you have a Mac computer (or another make that allows you to edit photos you uploaded) you could try and fiddle with it see if you can work out how to make it suitable x
