When I got home from work yesterday my neighbour told me a story about my Toffee (cat on avatar). My neighbour was in the back garden talking to my hubby over the fence when Toffee ran down the garden clutching a young blackbird, closely followed by 2 angry parent blackbirds who were squawking and flapping their wings. Hilary, my neighbour shouted at Toffee to put the bird down, which he did and then he crawled under her grand-daughter's small trampoline in the garden and hid from her!! I was surprised that he took any notice of her. She said he didn't come out until she called to him and he looked very 'sheepish' when he did. Wish I had seen that - I wonder what the parent blackbirds would have done? The baby blackbird flew off okay.

What a good boy for dropping the bird PFT and I work in a wildlife rescue hospital and unfortunately birds that are 'catted' (especially babies) usually don't make it through the night, even in incubators and receiving medical attention hopefully if the parents were around it'll be okay though!

Pleased he dropped the bird, just goes to show all parents try to protect their young, the birds would have probably attacked Toffee by pecking at him. Hope the little bird survived after his ordeal.

Just shows he knew he was in the wrong if he dropped the baby on command!

That is an amazing reaction. What's your neighbour's secret to such commands I'm afraid to say but Lexie seems to have found a nest & I think cleared it out in one day - we had 2.5 pre- fledgling bodies in the house in one day a few weeks ago.

Oh good to hear the baby bird escaped and is hopefully okay now. Toffee was a good boy doing what he was told.

A narrow escape for that little bird. Had Toffee obeyed if it were you? "Strange" people seem to have more influence.

Well done Toffee for dropping the bird...perhaps he was so surprised at your neighbours shouting at him! Well done blackbirds for chasing him...I've often handled blackbirds and rarely not got bitten! (Random one- had a kingfisher in the other day...my goodness they're tiny but VERY good at pecking. It pecked my skin then twisted for maximun pain! It didn't hurt too much but was very amusing to watch! I once had a tufted duck female who learn't the same trick!). Well done baby blackbird for getting away...as baby birds are crap little things and can't fly too well or figure the urgency in getting away!
