Well at least he is getting better with flat nosed dogs; it may just take some more time with choc labs before he feels comfortable around them.

He was good on his walk today, a big baby on the way to the park but fine at the park and on the way back. On the way to the park someone pulled out there wheely bin behind him and he spooked at that, and took a few minutes to calm down as he did not know where the noise had come from and he could not see anything obvious scary, then just outside the park gates another person was putting out there bin and barley decided to stop and stare at the man, he almost barked at him, but the man moved back into his driveway when he realized that barley was scared of him. he was very good at the park we walked round once then done some obedience stays. it was his first time wearing his 'space' bandanna on a walk.

The way I overcame my dogs' fear of wheelie bins is I kept moving the bin in front of me - away from me and the dogs until they realised that it's nothing to worry about. Perhaps that might help Barley get used to the noise and not jump next time he hears it. There is nothing wrong with a dog (or a person) being spooked, it is the time that takes them to regain composure that is impotant. The shorter the better. Carry on the good work.

This was the first time he has spooked ta wheelie bins, he has seen them and heard then many times before, but he is a strangedog, he will spook at some very strange things, even things that he has seen many times before, same as dogs he can have met the same dog loads of times then suddenly out of the blue he will lunge at them or he will lunge at a dog he has never seen before then he will meet it another time and be perfectly fine

Perhaps some blood tests at the vets might throw some light on it?

Not really he is very relaxed at home and on walks just some things spook him, he does not show any signs of stress and if he is uncomfortably with any situation i try to remove him from it as soon as possible. and trying to persuade dad to take barley to the vets for anything is a hard task as it is. he has got slightly worse since next door neighbors moved in with a dog, that keeps barking almost constantly, and since he has got older

Fatamorgana, I was also going to suggest blood work but I wasn't sure if there was an argument for it. I'm joy genned up on my veterinary stuff. But as you said, he's getting older it could be worth a shot if your dad would consider it. It could be an imbalance in hormones. But if your dad isn't willing to do so that would be difficult It's just odd that sometimes he's fine, sometimes he's not!

i am so happy right now, barley was sooooooooooooo good on his walk today, we have been working on his recall at home and this was the first time i took him to the park to practice it, he was on his long line but he came back every time i called him with considerable gusto, he came racing back every time, he was so good that i had to throw treats for him to get away from me, now his secret is packets of wet dog/cat food, it stinks but but he loves it, he thinks it is the best thing in the world, it is even better than liver cake or dried liver. We have had lots of trouble with his recall as he has not got the drive to return to us, but now he has. He walked very nicely to the park and back from it, which was very nice for me as i have a sore shoulder from taking a dive yesterday at agility, which was very funny but hurt .
