Now for the past few months i have been working very hard on barley's problems mainly his cat, bike, people chasing and his dog unfriendlyness. Now he had his first walk for a week on monday, mum walked him and she said at how much he had improved with other dogs people, cats and bikes. Now he still has a long way to go but he is a lot better than he was a few months back, on our walk today we had several bikes pass us and he did not lunge at any of them he looked at them then back at me for treats. He did growl at a dog but it had a muzzle on and he is very good at picking stuff up from other dogs but i did not want to go near it incase it was not very friendly but other than that he is progressing very well, especially with his flat nosed dog aggression he is getting much better and sees them as more ways to get treats instead of something to growl at. this has come in very handy at some shows that we have been to as he has been very well behaved. the only dog that we have not made any progress with is rottweilers but the ones that live near us are dog aggressive so we cant work with them.

I also think that the title to this thread is a little incorrect? "On his way to being a good dog"... I can see the point, however, Barley is a good dog to you, he's lovely isn't he? He just isn't that great on this subject. You will achieve, believe in yourself and believe in Barley

His training is going in the right direction but his health is going in the opposite direction, since getting back from his walk today he has gone back to how he was before his painkillers so another vet trip is on the menu

Well done for all of your hard work with Barley, and I'm glad he's showing some improvements. Just one thing - he sounds like he's in a lot of pain and you mentioned in your first post that he's been at some shows. I really hope that I read that wrong, because I think it would be highly unfair to take him to such an exciting, high energy environment while he's physically uncomfortable. Even with painkillers, he's probably still feeling the effects.

Oh ok, my mistake glad that you've decided not to go this weekend - I'm sure he'll be much better after a nice long rest.

Oh ok, my mistake glad that you've decided not to go this weekend - I'm sure he'll be much better after a nice long rest. he has already had a weeks rest, he thinks that it is great, no walks, and when he had his first walk on Monday he insisted to wee on every blade of grass apparently he has not being weeing in the garden for a week, well according to him as it just kept coming out it never stopped, he has not had a walk today and is asleep he just managed to lift his head to say hello to me with a few flicks of the tail then back he drifted doggy dream world

i am so so so so so so so so so so proud of barley at the moment, i have a very big grin on my face and i am over the moon. on his walk today he said hello to a bulldog without growling or lunging at it for the first time since we had him and he was not on a halti. i just let him decide whether he wanted to say hello to the dog or not, i let him approach the dog in his own time, no sudden turn around and avoidance of the dog, no giving a wide birth i just let him say hello to the dog without any fuss or intervention. His body language was very soft and almost exited when he saw the dog as he knew after meeting or bypassing the dog he would get a treat. he walked up to the dog in his own time said hello then walked on without any fuss. he has made his mummy very proud of him, and all my hard work has finally paid of and he is learning that dogs are friendly and it does not matter what they look like, he must treat them all the same .
