This is a bit of a rant, sorry about that. It's not something that can be done anything about, but it's upsetting for me. I'll try not to make this a long one
Basically, about a year ago I had to move out of my family's home. There were a lot of problems between my mum and I for a long time (dating back to when she wouldn't let me go to the college I wanted or do the course I liked) that erupted when I put my foot down about not going to university, but I won't get into that or we'll be here all day.. The thing is, I'm not around to help with the dogs any more. When I did live there, I was the one who did ALL and any training with them, ALL behaviour shaping etc. I alone worked with Woody on his issue with children, no one else thought it was important enough. Everyone else lets the dogs pull like crazy, sit practically on their laps while they eat and misbehave in public! My dad, especially. They can't tell when Monty is going to dislike a dog, because they don't pay attention while they're walking him.
When I lived there, Monty would take a disliking to a dog every now and then, it would be VERY rare. And if he did, they were usually also a problem themselves. Because I am quite good at being aware of everyone around me, it never got to the point of a spat between Monty and another dog, and we managed this on off lead walks too. It's all about knowing a problem dog before it becomes a problem (and I don't mean it's the other dog the problem, I mean a dog that will cause a problem, through it's own fault or not!)
My mum told me recently that Monty is TERRIBLE now and he is having to go to a behaviourist to 'sort him out' because he 'went for' a friend's dog (who they KNOW doesn't like Monty and he IS a dog that starts it off! He lunges at Monty before he even knows he's there, and my mum even said 'yeah he started it') at my aunt's house. Why bring together two dogs who don't like each other in a smallish house..? WHY?
He was fine when I left! I was even starting to think he was getting mellower now that he was more grown up. We'd had no issues with him for a long long time. What has gone so terribly wrong that he needs to see a behaviourist now? :s My little angel!
