Hey guys,
Don't think this is very serious. Rio had terrible diarrhea yesterday and it's continued on to today. He has also just been sick twice this morning. He seems really happy in every other way i.e he still plays and he got really excited as usual when we first let him out this morning so he doesn't at all seem lethargic. The bottom of his crate was covered with poo though poor boy, obviously he had a rough night.
He hasn't been drinking very much though he has been drinking. How long do you leave it before you consult a vet? Like I said he seems happy in every other way just has a bit of a funny tummy. He had dry toast for dinner yesterday and I read that if it still goes on for 24 hours you should call a vet. It probably is just something he's eaten thats upset him but I am never sure when you should call a vet.

Sorry to hear about Rio. If his got bad diarrhea and sickness and also not drinking I would call the vet and ask if they think he should go in as you don't want him dehydrating.
Does he feel hot? Are his gums a nice pink colour or pale looking?

He doesn't feel very hot. His gums do look like a pale pink. He has been drinking a little but not very much. Normally when I go to see him in the morning his water bowl has been nearly emptied but this morning it had only gone down a little.

I ditto Gladys , I would be calling a vet and asking the question, last thing you need is dehydration on top of everything else. Keep us informed aston and good luck

Are his gums usually pale or are they usually brighter? No harm in just giving them a call if you are worried or if your happy to give it today if his acting normal. Cooper was quite ill last August and he went down hill pretty fast. Playing like a loon during the day and then the temp and pale gums started that night by the next morning his temp was sky high. Sorry not trying to worry you but you know Rio best.

Vet said to keep an eye on him. If his gums get any paler or he gets any other symptoms I should see them immediately but just said to make sure he has plenty of water. His gums are a salmon like colour which is ok apparently.

If he wont drink, get a baby medicine syringe from the chemist, and use that as many times as you can, if he wont drink on his own that is. Hope he perks up soon

Keeping him hydrated is the most important thing, little and often if you can. If rio will usually drink from a hose or tap or when y are pouring water try that, I can't turn my hose on without dexter being under it chewing the water.
Just keep an eye on him and sure he'll be fine.
Personally I'd avoid dog food and maybe later if his tummy is ok a very small amount of rice? But only if his tummy is settled.
Give him hugs from me x

aston Oh great glad you called them. scallywag beat me to it I would get a syringe and just give him a little water every hour. I did this with Cooper and the vet said it stopped him from dehydrating. And yeah as teegiebear said I would go down the rice and chicken route rather than his normal food. Keep us posted and give him a big hug from us.

A baby syringe sounds like a good idea. Going to have to find a chemist I still don't know where anything is in Falmouth. Hopefully there's one within walking distance as my boyfriend has the car today. Would be really bad if I did have to rush into the vets before he gets back because I won't be able to get him there unless I get him to leave work early.

You can consult a vet at anytime aston. Out-of-hour will obviously rise a price for you to pay (money). If you gently pinch his skin, does it fling back? If so, he is getting enough fluids to keep him hydrated. If the skin stays in the pinched position once you let go, he is not getting enough fluids and he is dehydrated.

I think he is well hydrated. I've been using Sonics water bottle to make sure he drinks enough. Checked everything else and he seems fine. Think i've found out what the problem is too. When Rio went to the toilet earlier it was all grass and bits of leaf. He does eat a lot of grass and I try and stop him whenever I notice but you can't watch him 24/7. This is the first time he's gotten this poorly though from doing it. I wonder if it's something to do with the grass here. Might have to ask management of the block if they do anything to the grass outside. Doubt it but you never know. P.s How did you get your avatars to move BorderTerrier and scallywag?

aston Sounds like you have it all at hand. Good idea to ask about the grass. It might just be a different sort of grass though which he has over loaded with?!? OOh didn't realised you had moved. How you finding Falmouth? I love it there. How close to town are you? I love the little book shop there and the big pub/hotel allowed dogs last time I was there and did a wonderful lunch.

It's great. We're currently staying at the boyfriends parents but we should be able to move into our house in 2-3 weeks. We're quite close to town. It's about 10 minutes drive and the beach is only 2 minutes walk away which was awesome in the winter when dogs were allowed on it. Everywhere here is dog friendly. I noticed a lady with her dog sat with her in the hairdressers the other day and most shops will let them in. Most pubs are dog friendly too. I've asked all the ones i've been into and most say yes if they are well behaved.
