A friends Lurcher keeps losing his toenails (not just dew claws). He runs a lot, catching balls, toys etc. Is this a normal thing for this type of racing dog to lose toenails, or could it be a health issue?

Yes, its normal in dogs that are working, but I don't think to that extent in a pet. Katy goes running every day and plays with toys for hours, her toenails have never split.
I'd suspect there's some sort of weakness in the toes, probably ask the vet.

There are some potentially serious conditions which can occur in greyhound type dogs. A friend has had some serious problems with her greyhound (which started with what seemed to be nail bed infections), I would now air on side of caution and would say just go and rule out any problems with the vet.
Sorry I can not remember the exact name of what her dog has.
Good luck
