Hi folks looking for some advice from westie lovers on health problems esp the feet and any remedys or relief that can be used or give. i have a 2.5 yr old what i thought was a jack russell until i went to get her clipped as she is rough coated to be told by the groomer that she had westie in her as well as Russell ...she said she had been a groomer for over 25yrs and would stake her reputation on it so on getting home i looked for the emails from her breeder and emailed her to try and get the facts ...when i went to see her i saw two Russells who she led me to believe that were her mum and dad but she has now admitted that the dog wasnt her dad and that she had been mated by a westie so i have a Russell Westie cross and whilst i am mad i wasnt told the facts at the time as she was sold to me as a Russell i wouldnt part with her for the world ..HOWEVER she has a slight problem with her feet in that they seem to itch and she is forever chewing on them ...my vets was under the impression the same as me that she was a Pure Russell and was treating her with Steroids and Piriton but i would prefer her to be drug free so sodes anyone have advice on how naturally i can ntreat her itchy feet Attachments:

Have you had a check with the vet? My boy chewed his feet when he had impacted anal glands. If so, has she done it all the time? Or just recently? Do you know if there's anything to trigger it, such as the groomer catching a nail when they were cut? If she's done it for a while, it could have become a habit. Other possibilities could be boredom (do you give her any training/mind games such as Kongs) or stress. I'd first be looking at getting advice from the vets. I just happened to find that jasper had impacted glands when we emptied them at work (I'm also training to be a groomer ) and had to ask the vets to empty them properly. I agree, she definitely looks like she has westie in her. I'd also be really annoyed! I'm not sure whether anything could be done as she's selling cross breed puppies as pedigrees! Sounds a bit funny to me. However, she's still gorgeous

I'd say she definitely has Westie in her too and I believe Westies are notorious for having skin problems, so it might be worth looking into exactly what problems occur in that particular breed too. Other than that, like charlottte said, it could be any number of things and I think the vet is your best bet at first. It could also be an allergy to something i.e. grass or even something in her food, but you'd probably need the vet to run tests to establish something like that. If it's itchy skin, I can recommend Yumega Plus, which is a natural blended oil product containing salmon oil, starflower and goldenflax. You just add a small amount to their food each day. Within three weeks, my itchy Springer had stopped scratching as much, but obviously every dog will have a different reaction to it. But definitely speak to your vet first.
