Since there's been a few threads about hot doggies thought I'd add this in, we know it can be difficult to get dogs to drink but I was told to bait my dogs water before Cani x to make sure they were properly hydrated before running, I'd never heard of this before but tried it yesterday. basically if your dog likes sardines or the likes flake them in the bowl the. Add water. Quick mix and since the water is sardine flavour mines guzzled it. Maybe not ideal to use all the time but if its exceptionally warm and they're panting too much might help.

Never tried that before, Earl has never tried sardines but, as you can expect from a food greedy dog, he would love them I'm sure! I think that when your dog really needs a drink he will drink, as long as he has water in sight and in reach. Sometimes my Earl will pant and 'act hot', therefore, I lure him towards his water bowl, but he doesn't drink until I swish my fingers around in the water. Other times he will just make a beeline for water and guzzle it plain there and then... Good method though

It's something sled dogs do to prepare them for races aparently. Very handy for us getting into running

A drop of milk is usually works too. Might be less messy as using sardines. You can always soak your dogs food in water too before feeding, or spray it with some water. I also find that on hotter days if Oscar doesn't drink, if I wet my hand he will lick it off. Or its usually easier to go into the field and find a nice murky, brown puddle for him to drink from! He's an odd dog, very odd.

The vet suggested this after Cooper was ill last year and he doesn't drink very much. Although you should be careful with milk bextull some dogs can't digest it and will be sick, even dog milk can be hard on their tummies. I have found the best thing to add to Coopers water is wet food so it makes a kind of gravy. But I like the idea of the sardines as at the moment I am adding water to his kibble. teegiebear did you dogs take the water well? I had to stop giving Cooper lots of gravy water as he kept bring some back up.

gladys they loved it! They love sardines anyway and get them as a treat. The water looked cloudy and the sardine flakes sunk to bottom but they drank a whole bowl each since it was a very warm day I wanted them very hydrated for running then ate the sardines at the bottom. Ill be using it before every run. Just thought it was a great tip if its a warm day to hydrate dogs before walks or to encourage them to drink more

Yeah I think I might give it a go but with just a small bowl of water. Thanks.

I have to say that we have had more than one dog that would ignore fresh, clean water to drink from murky, insanitary puddles - or even vile water out of the gutter! Perhaps Oscar IS an odd dog - but he's certainly not alone!

Earl never drinks out of puddles... does that make him an odd dog?!

Pepper likes to drink out of plant pots too - just tonight she ran past the water bowl full of clean water in the kitchen to go to a plant pot in the garden!

I use diluted milk to make mine drink. a few of my friends have suggested this although I was unsure I tried it as my puppy is a serious non drinker. Didnt work!
The sardine thing sounds good, does anyone know if this is ok for a 9 week puppy? Thanks

I'd say yes, I fed my boys sardines or tuna every day from 7weeks old to help them grow and bulk up
maybe just a little to try thou as your pup is so small to get you started

I would also say yes, karin. It will be a good source for your growing puppy, and I am sure it will do him/her only good. Make sure you gradually build up the feeding however, as with any dog, feeding a new substance can have negative consequences. Speak to your vet... they are always there for you and your dog.
