Last Thursday evening Stevie was walking around with his tail down, he tends to carry it horizontally rather than up, & the tip was touching the floor. It reminded me of Osiris back in April when he got those nasty abscesses yourpet.boards.net/post/171896/thread
Stevie was sensitive to his tail being handled so decided that if it was the same in the morning I'd take him to the vet. It was just the same so got a vet appointment for 10:50 a.m. & blow me down it was the same actual vet he & Shady have seen every time there's been some concern (proven or not!). She grinned & was very good (as always) with Stevie. She agreed there was something amiss but could find any injury. The decision was to prescribe an anti-inflammatory (& on my suggestion an antibiotic, just in case) As he doesn't do things by mouth we decided that a Convenia long lasting antibiotic injection although not ideal was probably the best idea. This is kept in a fridge so off she went to get it & while she was out of the room Stevie decided to wash his tail in one particular spot.
When she came back I told her & by checking the wet patch she found the cat bite. The suspected cause of Stevie's discomfort was found! She said she wished all her patients were as helpful! As it was quite small & difficult to find I suggested that it might make sense to clip his tail round it so that we could see it easily in the future. The keep cat & dog treats in the surgery so I suggested I gave Stevie some while she clipped - worked a treat!!!
Oh & keep him while he gets his daily Loxicom/Metacam as he has suffered an injury. He's not impressed & neither are Shady & Lexie as I decide it we easier to keep them all in than juggle the access to the catflap.
I'm absolutely convinced its the same neighbour's black cat as caused Osiris & Shady's abscesses. It's regularly in my garden shrubbery or charging out from under a car at the cats! It can't get in the catflap but it definitely tries. It's still young but older than the 2 boys. I think it believes that my garden is part of its territory or is jealous of the catflap as it doesn't have one so has to be let in or out by its owners. It's male but neutered. I think Osiris deterred it in the past but Stevie is a laidback "Peace not War, Man" cat but will defend himself if really necessary whilst Shady will have a go if attacked. Lexie normally avoids the cat but I did see her go after it when it was following Stevie in the early days.
Anyway I subsequently found a small bite mark the opposite side of Stevie's tail but neither developed into a full blown abscess thank goodness. Today Stevie was more relaxed about his tail being touched so I decided to let them out. Stevie stopped at the catflap & was very cautious & guess who appeared at the outside of the flap!!! I opened the door & it had gone back under the bushes so Stevie went out cautiously & I kept an eye on the situation. It wasn't going but it wasn't actively attacking whilst I was there, with a kids small water pistol at the ready
Hopefully all will be well.
