Also Orpheous, I agree with TT, his coat looks quite fluffy so cutting it might damage it. If his legs and ears are particularly feathery then using thinning scissors could work to take the bulk out of it, but other than tidying his feet up I wouldn't really touch his coat much at all. Like TT said, he'd freeze without his coat in this weather lol! He's a handsome little devil is he a friends? That's what I was afraid of. I didn't think he's the kind of dog to need a proper clipping. I'll see what he's like when they bring him up lol I know, bless him! He's my cousin's dog. They adopted him when they were in Cyprus (my cousin is in the army) and then brought him back last year. He's adorable. But he didn't like grass when he first came over, so he used to dance through it lol.

Thanks charlotte! I will have a look around, there is a couple of parlours in my area, one has only recently opened in the past few months I think! I really want to compete with Charlie, but obviously I will have to learn properly first! Does anyone know, would I have to keep a skirt on Charlie in order to compete with him? Because it has to be breed standard? And I haven't seen a Westie without the skirt on in a pedigree show before? Thanks in advance!

Np and AL, yes, you'll have to groom him to breed standard which includes the skirt. Westies were originally hand stripped way back when. I'm not sure if competitive grooming means you have to hand strip. If you get in with a salon you shouldn't have a problem with westies. Westies, shih tzus and spaniels are our most popular dogs

Ok, thanks Charlotte, I will let his skirt grow in next time and see how he looks. Thanks, any advice or tips for hand-stripping? Clipping? Keeping around the eyes, ears, feet and legs and skirt tidy?

Hand stripping is like an art. It's more practise than being able to explain. The dogs coat needs to be ready to be stripped. Usually twice a year although we get a few Borders in that get their coat 'rolled' every 8 weeks, we just take 20% of the coat out to keep them tidy. If Charlie has had his coat clipped in the past, he won't be able to have it stripped. In fact there are very few Westies tht have stripable (making up words ) coats and more, so I'm not sure how they fare for competition grooming. Clipping wise, you need to know your lines, so where to clip to, where to blend etc. You always have to clip with the grain of the hair, never (!!!) against it, it takes the coat twice as short as the blade if you reverse it. It's just something that takes practise to perfect. Eye wise, you'd probably be looking at a pair of bullnose scissors to trim the hair out the corners of his eyes, you'd need to keep them pointed down away from the eyes as dogs squirm and then you could end up with scissors in their eyes! Feet you could use a pair of small bullnose scissors to trim them down, trimming them evenly and so they're circular, then using bullnoses to trim the hair in between the pads For legs usually use a comb to comb the hair straight and then just thin the ends off with thinning scissors, gives a more natural look. If you get in some work exp with a salon or look at courses (I know houghall do night courses for grooming) they'll be able to teach you all the stuff you'd need to know and let you put it into practise

I was tempted to kidnap him at New Year, lol. He's teeny tiny compared to my two - he's smaller than Oscar the JRT!

Thanks Charlotte, helped loads!!!! I have been looking at several websites, been searching at dog grooming salons and watching videos on youtube. I never knew that you couldn't hand-strip after they had been clipped as videos on youtube show Westies being both clipped+hand-stripped . So thanks! Does this mean, I could take part in the groom through class instead?? -Puppypal? - I really want to do the groom through, but when I think about it, with a Westie, I would probably be more successful in the clip/strip/trim class? Wouldn't I? Plus I wouldn't really mind either its just, arr, I dunno, I think I just need more practise/training etc! :/ I have been looking on pets at home website and I am going tomorrow to 1). Seek some advice and 2). I have found a good grooming set with the blades, oil, brushes, DVD to demonstrate and trimmers, and a couple more things - the reviews were good and a Westie owner said they were impressed with the product(s) - only £30 too! Charlotte; how old do you have to be to join a dog grooming course at Houghall? Do you know? Thanks again everyone! P.S. Puppypal; if you get the mini Barley then I get Big Barley, correct?

AL, no prob In not sure for the houghall course cause I just did it in with my Animal Management Diploma. I'd imagine 16 though? You'd probably be able to find out on the website or by phoning/emailing. And I've always been told you can't strip then clip so I'm not sure, TT might be able to answer. But we don't get any stripable Westies in, so it's more for Border Terriers. We don't clip Borders unless they've been clipped elsewhere in the past, just to make that clear haha. I don't always deal with the hand strips so its not my most knowledgable area haha

He must be tiny indeed Orpheous! Thanks AGAIN, Charlotte! . Well either way I have done lots of research on hand-stripping Westies and I have hand-stripped a Border Terrier before and tried it on Charlie, his fur definitely isn't strippable! I just had a look about and a little tug on some parts which I thought may have needed stripped but nothing! He is at the dog groomers on monday anyway, but my nanna is taking him for me as I will be back at school! - Unfortunately! Also, I give Charlie a damn good brush yesterday an hour long! I give him about a 15-20 minute brush just quickly over his legs and face just to make sure he had no mats!
