Barley just had 2 1/2 hours of grooming and pampering, very tiring but got it all done in the end including teeth brushed, nails grinded, ears cleaned and feet trimmed. the grooming took 2 hours 1 hour per side and all the rest of it took 1/2 an hour 15 mins just on claw grinding as he did fight a bit about me touching his feet but he gave up after he realised that i was fighting was not worth it, he is now lying outside sleeping after his pampering.

Puppypal you mention nail grinding, do you have an electric/battery nail file? If so would you recommend it? It doesn't take me long to groom Cooper, a few minutes with a grooming mitt, a once over every other day on his teeth. And clip and file nails monthly. The advantages of a small non hairy dog.

I brushed Woody a bit yesterday and trimmed the hair down on the bottom of his feet as they get really hairy and dirty his feet look a lot tidier now though.

Barley is very patent. My two don't get that much pampering. They don't seem to take that long for a brush and inspect (probably take 10 mins a couple of times a week!!), only do ear's etc when mother nature needs a helping hand! Must get back to tooth cleaning though, been lax recently!

I must say I love grooming Jasper Takes me around 10 minutes to bath, 30-40 minutes to dry and fluff then can take up to 3 hours to cut. Then roughly 20 minutes every 2-3 days brushing/combing out. It's a big commitment but he's worth it

BT; I am not in the YKC and I am not sure on whether I want to join in yet. But to be honest I really want to join it but instead of doing agility I might just take up grooming with my Charlie? Would be good as he is a Westie? But would this mean I would have to keep his skirt on? (fur along the belly and undercarriage). I don't like it on male Westies - usually, depends on the look of the Westie himself. P.S. Thankyou, Earl is a very handsome little boy too! Charlotte; Thanks! It must be really good being able to groom your own dog because then you will be able to have him cut EXACTLY how you want him to be cut, I like that! Have you ever had the experience of grooming like a big dog, like a Newfoundland or something? What's the biggest breed of dog you have groomed? PP; Sounds like you have fun grooming Barley! Why not take up grooming with him in the YKC, he is a beautiful looking and natured dog, worth a thought! I am glad everything is going well with his grooming!

AL: that was what this thread was about competitive grooming, i will be doing it through the YKC, i am going to the newarkactivity weekend and i am hoping to get somewhere in a crufts qualifier, i would like to win and get to crufts but might be a bit too much considering it would have been my first grooming comp. Gladys: yes i would recommend an electric nail grinder i won one out of the dogs monthly magazine and it works really well, the only thing i dont like is the smell of the nail grinding

Oh yes I remember, sorry Annabelle, I have the memory of a pigeon, trust me! I think you and Barley will do very well as he has a lovely coat condition and seems to be quite a laid-back, lazy boy! When is the newarkactivity weekend? Do you think that me and Charlie Boy would do well in grooming? Does the dog have to be completely un-interested in other dogs?

Do you not have to groom to breed standard for grooming competitions? I have no idea about competitions? And AL, we get a couple of Newfies and a show Bernese in. His sister was the one tht got through to the group judging at Crufts! They take a good half hour to bath and 1.5 hours to dry (and that's 2 people!) I love being able to groom him myself, there's not many groomers I would trust with him and although it takes FOREVER I do enjoy it Westies are lovely to groom to standard (if they're not aggressive and tatty) and I love them with a skirt. We also do false skirts which is where you clip the belly short but leave the actual skirt on so it gives the effect of a skirt

the newark activity weekend is in november
You do have to groom to the breed standard if you have a pedigree but otherwise you have to groom to the comp rules of all dead hair removed no harming of the dog intentional or unintentional, the dog must not be aggressive to the judge and the coat must be in very good condition.

My Charlie doesn't suit a skirt, which is why I prefer without I think! I love the girls with the skirts on, because they actually look like girls! My groomers call Charlies haircut, a 'Teddy-bear hair cut' which I don't know whether it is commonly used for groomers but its like, the dog is cut down short, but is left with a nice fluffy head and legs - (which they call trousers) Charlie is neither aggressive or tatty! I wanted that Bernese to win, or the Aussie Shepherd! Dog grooming is something which I have always wanted to do and advice and help or just random information would be absolutely wonderful Charlotte! HINTHINT!

Well at the moment I have a few questions for both you and PP! PP; So if was to compete with Charlie in grooming, would I have to have a skirt on him for breed standard? Or does it not matter? As I wouldn't mind leaving a skirt on him for competition? He isn't aggressive towards anyone, quite laid-back, interesting in other dogs but soon calms down at all shows we go to(?). Any help, information and advice would be great Annabelle, fanks! Charlotte; How would I start getting into grooming? Also after working in a parlour when I was older and passed training, etc, would I be able to set up my own business but a mobile dog grooming business? So that I drove to peoples houses in the North East (mainly Washington, Sunderland and Newcastle) instead? - In the future future of course!

Sorry, I don't want to hijack your thread PP, but as this is a grooming thread can I ask a quick question Charlotte? What blade would you recommend for this little dog? I haven't got a decent enough picture of him so that you can see what his coat length is like. It's my cousin's dog and he asked me to clip him when it gets warmer (he's a Cyprus rescue and would get cold), but I don't know if my 8.5 blade would be okay to use on him. Attachments:

I am not sure on what blade you would be able to use on him Orpheous so sorry I am no use there, but what I do know is that dog looks like a mini Barley! Hhahaha! So very cute with a lovely smile!
