Hi all, Recently got notified by Ziggy's current insurer(Argos) that they'll no longer insure her for her thyroid medication as it has been over 12 months since her diagnosis they currently charge me £46 a month, which was worth sticking with when they covered her thyroid as I knew a new insurer wouldn't cover existing conditions, but now that's expired it feels like an insane amount really! I've seen good things about PetPlan, but would be interested to hear who other people are with and the pros/cons? Ziggy turns 15 this year so I'm tempted to go for a lifetime cover for illnesses rather than 12 months or a vet fee limit, which PetPlan don't seem to do. My brain is fried from trying to read all these policy documents and not really knowing what I'm looking for

Me neither I preferred to put the monthly amount away in a bank account.

All my pets are now insured with Animal Friends and all have a Lifetime Policy. Bramble is my oldest cat and she is 14. I have her on a Superior Policy which pays up to £2,000 for each condition (I think) per year. The monthly payment is £14.65. You can do a higher one for £4,000 cover. The excess is £99 and because Bramble is an older cat, there is an additional co-payment charge of 20% of the bill for me to pay. I've been with them several years and haven't yet made a claim but as with most insurance policies, they do increase every year. Let us know how you get on Weims.

Sorry Weims, can't help as like scallywag I chose to go the bank account route rather than insurance. I'm assuming that Ziggy thyroid meds is Felimazole (Roman's been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism last year). I've just checked & depending on tablet size a 31 days a 1 tablet a day would cost £4.03- £9.61 online of course you would need to get a vet's prescription, don't know what yours would charge or even what they would charge for tablets themselves. So buying those tablets wouldn't be too bad without being covered by insurance. So finding a new insurer sounds the right way to go £46 a month is a lot. Might be worth asking if Argos would reduce the cover if the thyroid diagnosis is no longer covered.

Thanks everyone for your replies and suggestions! Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I've just started a new job so at them moment it seems like when I'm not working I'm sleeping I hadn't considered the possibility of just saving the money in a separate account as opposed to insurance, I'll definitely have a think about that as it could be a better option. My only worry then is that if I need to claim a lot in the first month or so that could be difficult! Animal friends do seem to be the cheapest lifetime policy, I was unsure about them as I didn't know anyone who used them but I'll look into them a little more now tonib She's on thiamazole(specifically Thynorom) which I think is the same as felimazole but the liquid form? and also Kaminox which is a potassium supplement, I think you're right and I can find it much cheaper online, I must look into it. Good idea about asking Argos if they'd reduce the cost now her thyroid isn't covered as they might do that, especially if I let them know I'm thinking of changing insurance provider.

I've added up all my pet insurance policies up and I have decided that as they come up for renewal, I won't continue with them as they increase every year whether I've claimed or not. I've just had the renewal price through for Kai Ruki for June and it's going up to £20.56 per month from £16.03. I am going to save the money. On the renewal form it states that as I've been with them a few years I could possibly get a better price off another company but obviously I couldn't then claim for previous illnesses. Insurance companies would be better off giving their loyal customers better prices. Also, as all my pets will be over 10 years old this month, apart from the £99 excess I have to pay a 20% co-payment off any vet bill before I get any payment off the insurance. Obviously because of this I don't make a claim for smaller amounts. For example, with a £200 bill I would have to pay £99 excess and also £20 co-payment, so would get back £81. I should have done it earlier as Kiba-Khan's has now been renewed - his went up from £19.86 per month to £25 per month.
