Hi,
Im Moving back to UK after living in Gibraltar for a few years only this time on the return drive ill have 2 cats in the back,
Now its a 9 hour drive, plus a 21 hour ferry ride, the 2 cats will have to stay in the car the whole journey, so i was thinking of large dog cage that can have their litter, food, water and bedding and still have a bit of room so the can move around a little.
Im just wondering if any one has had the same kind of issues with a long drive and could give any recommendation or advice or any ideas to make it as comfy as possible for them,
Any help would be very much appreciated thanks, Egon

Hi Egon, Just a thought, are the cats used to a harness & lead, which would at least allow them to have a bit of exercise on the journey. Also are they used to car travel? There are sprays that have a calming effect (Feliway & Pet Remedy come to mind) which could be applied to bedding. They also are available as plug-in diffusers which might help them settle in their new home. The Pet Remedy diffuser also comes with a Travel Diffuser pad for hanging in your car or basket. This is re-usable by adding 2-3 drops of oil from the plug in bottle. Also there are tablets (zylkene) that can help calm cats, you may need to give them a few days before you travel as well. I might speak to your vet for any travel advise as I assume you'll be seeing them to get the necessary injections, treatments & paperwork to bring the cats into the UK. I'm sure you've already sorted that out but just in case see an overview on www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad & details at www.gov.uk/pet-travel-information-for-pet-ownersI've no experience of this sort of journey so can't really think of any other advice. Hopefully someone else will.

I've done a moving involving a car and ferry, but it wasn't nearly as long as that. I think you're right in using a dog crate, big enough so they can have plenty bits in.

Hi Tonib,
Their kind of used to a harness we had a loft in the old place and we used to let then up there to investigate on a lead but as their both indoor cats i really dont want to let them out of the car thats why i was thinking of a big dog cage, but the calming pads sound good and yes they are fully up to date with the injections and passports as my bank balance can prove lol turns out there's lots of nasty things for pets to catch in Spain.
Thank you again.

hi Sarahhound,
Im lucky to have small car/van combi so i was thinking of a big dog cage and they can walk around in but chances are i'll get a massive cage for them and they will both just sleep the whole way in a corner, which will be handy lol my big concern tho is that im not sure i can check on them during the ferry as they have to stay in the car the whole way unlike for dogs that have kennels up on top.
thanks.

I assume you're coming with Brittany Ferries as they seem to be the only ones authorised to bring pets into the UK from Spain. They do have cabins on certain ferries/routes which are animal friendly & although they say they are only suitable for one pet there is a number to ring if you have more & they'll see what they can do (interestingly they also have an FAQ on their website which says 2 are allowed www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/article/32828/can-i-book-2-dogs-into-a-pet-friendly-cabin . Also their website states that by arrangement you can visit the pets kept in the vehicle on the ferry. It may be worth contacting the ferry company to find out more, there's also a fair amount of info on their website. www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/help/pet_abroadHave a good journey
