Right so first I'm so proud of my boy Cooper.
Over the last few weeks at agility he has had a play with some new dogs and has been a real star.
He has played with a boy lurcher x greyhound - a great game of chase and bark.
And 2 very hairy girls a Border Collie and a Leonberger. - He did get over excited and start doing the Boston bitey face thing and also tried to swing from their fur like he does with his poodle x wolfhound girlfriend, but when he got told off with growls he stopped straight away and backed off. Bouncing in to a play bow and chase me mode again.
For those that can't remember the reason this makes me so happy and proud is because ever since Cooper has had several dogs go for him over his four years of life it has made him go from a happy go lucky wanting to meet and play with every dog he meets no matter how big or small. To a dog who is very weary of black labs (the main attackers) and most males. His not good at meeting unknown dogs on leads anymore.
So Yesterday we went to my friends for a dog walk, Cooper, me and my friend with her 3 dogs. Cooper is not as good with unknown male does since said attacks but is ok with her small JR x male (even though he growls at cooper for wanting to play) and her female Saluki x. She has now added a male Saluki and the first and only time we met up, Cooper kept telling him off (hecks up slightly and a bark and jump forward) in my friends house. But out on our walk Cooper off lead and the Saluki on lead Cooper went in to play bow and wanted to play, but he is now weary of Coops.
Yesterday our second meet up, Cooper was so much better with him, walked nicely with him on the walk but the Saluki didn't want to stay near him and when we returned home he went up to him and sniffed his legs nicely with out heckles etc. At which point he got a treat.
So Question - What shall I do with unknown dogs on lead? Do I let him say hello still. But only for a few second? Or just sniff with a distances between them?
At the moment I treat Cooper when he is calm around other dogs on lead. I look for heckles and if they start I call him away. I try to praise and treat before heckles raise.
He seems ok with all dogs off lead but it makes my tummy go over every time you first do that with a new dog.
His very weary of black labs or very hairy dogs where the face is not seen easily. In our training class we have both a black female and a male bearded collie. Cooper has to know where they are the whole class, he has told them both off on lead but has tried to get the black lab to play while off lead???
I have many people see him do the telling off, everyone agrees it is not aggression, it's more like a warning 'don't start' kind of thing. If the dog he does it to then wants to play Cooper will. Also if a dog goes for him he gets out of there never shows aggression back.
Sorry for the essay.
