Has anyone else noticed that pet insurance is getting expensive? I have just had my renewal price through for Kai Ruki with Tesco insurance and it has increased from £7.45 per month to £10.24 per month. I think that is a large increase considering that I have never claimed on his insurance. I looked online at some others, Petplan and Argos and they were £16.59 and £11.51, both with a higher excess than my Tesco policy, so it looks like I will have to accept the increase.

A lot of people tend not to insure dogs, but I guess cats get out and on roads and in fights etc?
I'd probably just put the money away in a savings account every month instead of paying some insurance company. Extortionate doesn't cover it!
But then, it's easier to be careful with dogs than cats! XD

lotsofcats Yeah all three of mine have gone up by about £1.50/£2.00 a month, each year. I didn't phone and moan with Coopers as I did claim for him last year when he was referred to a specialist vet but I've never claimed on the cats so I'm going to call them and have a moan when their renewal forms come in the post later this year cause I know they will go up. Pawsforthought - The trouble with saving money instead of paying into an insurance policy is how much can you actually save in a year?? When Cooper was ill last year we were quoted £1'500.00 if we had all the test to find out what was wrong. That was just for the tests, so the first was full blood count at £200.00, and then if we needed the next lot of test that would have been £500.00 etc. If we had had to have all the tests it would have meant pricey long term treatment. Luckily the first lot of blood tests were all he needed. I have a good amount of savings so the first lot of tests and treatments would have been fine. I also have enough for ongoing treatment for a while but depending on how much and for how long the money would run out at some point. I would never like to be in the position where I can't afford to carry on with treatment. Which is why I would rather pay for insurance that I hope I will never need than not have the money to treat.

I must admit to not having ours insured but have a bank account for them. The problem is that Lexie's sensitive stomach/IBS was a known condition before we got her & her insurance wasn't up to date Not sure that any insurance would still be paying for Penny's arthritis drugs & if it was would probably cost me more than the drugs themselves. Both Penny & Osiris came to us with gum/dental issues so that wouldn't be covered. Roman's injuries have been minor (with one exception - which wasn't too bad anyway) & would have been under the excesses each time. So paying the equivalent of the monthly insurance premium into a bank account for all 4 certainly builds up. Just hope haven't put the kibosh on everything by saying that. For those have multi-cat households the insurance certainly mounts up. Like all insurances its going up every year.

Here's a thought which may help some members - if any of you are union members - are there any insurance deals? Perhaps some insurers give extra discount for NHS / Police / County Council employees. Also, might be worth checking your current account to see if there are any benefits with them. Also, check if your house policies etc give you a discount for taking out another policy with the same insurer.
I feel I am lucky as my Vet's have an in house health care scheme where I pay a monthly fee and the minimum I get is all the cats wormed and fleaed with all the vaccinations. If I need to get them seen for treatment, I only pay the first consultation fee and then meds / ops / xrays are included. The only limitations applied are to do with pre-existing conditions and also for Floyd as a senior catizen.

I think more vets should offer this type of health care scheme.
