I've started letting out our two youngest cats (18months) gradually, they have now got to the point where they are out all day and we get them in at night. They are brother and sister and the male (Bruno) is very easy to get in and if the door is open he comes and goes as he pleases with his sister (Daisy) very near by. But Daisy is a real pain to get in! Any other time of the day she will come running over for a cuddle and play but she just knows when you want to get her in! We've tried tempting her with food, toys, showing her Bruno inside, but she just doesn't want to come in! They both stay really nearby and always follow each other and like I said she is fine when she knows your not going to catch her and once she's in she's either hard and fast asleep or cause mischief with her brother, she has plenty of toys and cuddles when in. She just enjoys it so much outside! I don't really want to restrict outside time because they have so much fun chasing flies and each other. When you go to catch her she doesn't run very far just enough so you can't catch her! And if you walk away she follows you?!? Any ideas how to tempt her in? TIA

My girls both go outside, Ebony's the more nervous of the two and she tends to run back inside if something scares her, Tigger will come back in if there's food available (she's very food oriented) Try pretending you don't need them both in and have the door open and see what happens The other trick is finding whatever Daisy will do anything to have and use that to get her in - like in my Tigger's case it's food

Hi chloecatlady, welcome to the forum. I've got 4 cats who can come & go as they please most of the the time. I note you say Bruno comes & goes as he pleases if the door is open, do you mean that the door has to be open for them to access the outdoors? If so have you considered a catflap there are a number on the market. We used to have on that worked on tags that you put on their collars - fine if they weren't regular collar losers! We've now got one that works by reading their microchips although works with RFID tags on their collars if they aren't chipped. Both of these could be set so that they could come in but not be allowed out again - either by manually setting the lock or a time system. Admittedly we've never used this function ourselves. So that would enable you, rather than tempting your cat in, to let her come in of her own accord. Especially if her tea was put down at that time. Even without a catflap aiming to give her an evening meal or even playtime when she is due in may well be a way to encourage her in. Hope that helps. Do let us know how you get on & others here may have some better ideas for you. Look forward to hearing more about your cats.

My two were indoor cats for almost a year before I started letting them go outside (was waiting to get the youngest spayed) and now they have 24hr access to the outdoors through a cat flap in our front door. We live in a VERY quiet area surrounded by overgrown gardens and fields so letting them go outdoors is not a problem.,,,but if I were in an urban area I think I'd be a lot less relaxed to do so
Tonib said it all really - if you have a catflap it may be an idea to set the lock at tea time (or whatever time suits you) so that they can come in and not go back out until morning or whatever time you prefer - they'll soon get used to the routine...especially if there's a lovely meal waiting for them once they DO come in When we first started letting Chilli & Lily outdoors they would come back inside every half hour or so to check we were still there but as their confidence grew and they sussed out the area they stayed out longer. I've noticed their daily routine now is to come in for breakfast, snooze in the bedroom for a few hours, possibly pop out for an hour or so during the day, come back for another meal and nap and then wake up properly around 9pm and go out as it starts to get dark (more mice & moths around then I guess ) Occasionally during the day, especially if it's sunny, Chilli will be out virtually all day and not come home until around 8pm and then plead starvation But during wet days or the colder months they DO both spend a lot more time inside with us.
Perhaps try getting Chloe in with a laser pointer - most cats cannot resist that little red dot and there's been a few stubborn cats we've got to come in or just go into a different room by enticing them with the pointer
Main thing is...don't panic about the time or start getting angry or stressed out about trying to catch Chloe because she will know instantly from your body language and will deliberately stay out of reach then

Thanks for the great advice guys! We definitely do need a catflap! I'm home all day so can let them in and out as they please (not that they come in) and most days have the door open all day but they do hang around the door. I'm not sure if she really gets the fact that she can come and go as she pleases I kind of think she thinks that if she comes in she'll never be allowed out. I think for the mean time before we get a flap, I like the routine idea I think a regimented routine and see if that helps her. I didn't really think cats did routine (More you do as I say when I say animals lol!). Maybe if I let them out and make sure I get them in kind of the same time each day and have a tasty dish for her to come back too and her toys out she will get the hang of it. Bruno is so easy to get in. Daisy would be probably be a lot easier if she was more food orientated! Need to find that special treat that she can't go with out at meal times!! Thanks a lot guys really good advice from everyone! Much appreciated!!

Oh cats can do routine chloecatlady - their routine! but that's the trick getting them to think that yours is what they want. Our Lexie is confined to her own room overnight (long story involving peace & quiet for the other 3!) At bedtime she's quite eager to go upstairs to bed as she gets some fresh kibble to nibble on overnight & a Felix Twist treat. Its the last item that's the key, she has taken a real shine to them so she gets one a day at bedtime in her room. She's often coming to tell us its bedtime if we're up late!!! I see you have another cat, Guinness, is she allowed out?

Don't know you do it lol 3's enough for me! Lol do yours go out? Is it Guinness in your profile pic chloecatlady? As to 4 it used to be 3 but after I'd retired we helped someone out & rehomed one of their cats (Lexie) All our cats are allowed out with free access to the catflap other than if we need to keep one or more in for vet/cattery visits or injury recovery. Like Guinness they have all brought back presents although Roman no longer does as he learnt they vanished & he prefers to consume them Penny (16) used to be a great moth hunter - she always preferred the moths in the security light in the garden to butterflies although she wouldn't turn up her nose to a good sniff & hunt on a buddleia during the day! She mainly stays in now but has her moments out, especially with the good weather, but doesn't go far. She also does a runner out & behind the shed if she thinks she's going to the vets! We have to think about stopping her before she realises & even that action can trigger an escape or hide Roman (11?) is our real outdoor boy, although in some ways the most amenable to being kept in for injuries etc. He goes out every day regardless of the weather & can go out after breakfast, come in for tea & vanish again with the odd visit over night for some kibble. These days he's usually back early morning but we've had to go looking for him on numerous occasions, one reason we have the Loc8tor on their collars. Osiris (9) spends a lot of the day & evening out bar visits in for some food or to sleep on our bed (especially in bad weather/winter. He tends to be in overnight. Lexie (6) is a great hopper in & out of the catflap but as I mentioned previously is in kept in overnight.
