sorry lotsofcats I missed the dogs, hadn't realised that there was a 3rd adult I know councils are trying to reduce non-recycable waste but there has to a be a limit to how little one can produce A smaller wheelie bin I would think is going to create more fly-tipping (not by you I might add!). Goodness knows what our next door neighbours would do in your area - there's 5 adults there plus 1 cat & 1 dog! Does your council take in to account the number of people living in a property or the size of the property? We get recycling collections (fornightly) for garden waste (green wheelie), plastic bottles, foil, cans & glass jars/bottles (blue wheelie), cardboards & paper (blue bag) but don't have waste food or plastic. Luckily the local Sainsburys' recycling takes the plastics otherwise that would be in our black wheelie (non-recyclable) With only 2 plus 4 cats (who are 50% outdoor) the black wheelie is enough. During grass cutting, pruning etc. season we can have problems with the green wheelie capacity, even though we have 3 compost bins (which don't compost the garden & fruit/veg. waste quickly enough)! We even reduce our recycled cardboard as we put some in the compost!

Does your council take in to account the number of people living in a property or the size of the property? Yes, my daughter still lives at home. Our council do not take into account how many people live in a property. They are spending over £700,000 on providing new smaller bins for each household!! They waste so much money - they recently spend £80,000+ on a cycle route around the edge of a small car park when the bikes used to go through the car park. We already have evidence of fly-tipping in the area but that will most certainly increase.
I'm doing an order on Zooplus today and will try some of the cat litters suggested. Thanks for all your comments.

I know I used to work in local government - but that's madness spending even taking in to account needing to reduce landfill costs - presumably there may even have to be a change to the lorry mechanisms that pick them up ( mind you it might be a case of one mechanism fits all bin sizes already I suppose).
Reminds me of one council I know of that years ago changed all the public toilet signs from Ladies & Gentlemen to Women & Men so as to be more PC! Alright not in the same league of spend but completely unnecessary (in my opinion)
Good luck with the new cat litter(s) it will be interesting to hear how you get on with them.

Haha me too, although I prefer the Lassies and Laddies ones you get where I'm from (in some pubs, not in the public bogs haha). Although Laddies might confuse some Ladies

Although I have a sneaky suspicion that as the place concerned had a lot of foreign language students (studying English) it was thought to have more direct translations & hence understood.

I have tried quite a few different cat litters and have chosen to use 2 different sorts, Greenwoods and Tigerino. I think I prefer the Greenwoods to the cats!, I love that the clumps can be flushed down the toilet and that it can go on the compost heap, but the cats don't seem very impressed with it. I had 3 bags of Tigerino crystals cat litter that I had free with cat food from Zooplus and hadn't used so I gave it a try and I was really impressed with it for the litter trays in the house - I don't have to change them for 5-6 days and can't smell anything at all from them. So, less waste for the rubbish bin. I am now checking out whether my new choices are cheaper.

Hopes the treadability lotsofcats ? - We're using PAH own clumping which the cats seem to like but, despite mats, it gets spread quite a distance away.

I used PAH cat litter for years but about a year ago a friend recommended cats best Oko plus. it's 100% organic, it can be flushed down the toilet. It is amazing I wouldn't use any other cat litter now. You use far less of it than you do with the wood pellets as when the cats wee in it it forms a small solid ball.

I've also tried the cats best Oko as it's very similar to the Greenwoods - I bought a large bag of it from Zooplus last week as it was on offer. It's so heavy I can hardly move it! So now I am using Greenwoods, cats best Oko and the Tigerino crystal type.

I'll have a look at the Oko plus - we're using the PAH clumping & it does have less waste than the wood pellets but if you can flush it then its less into the waste bin. Thanks ruthcatladymcd

I tried the Oko once as well but found it got carried around the house, despite mats around the litter tray areas Shame because it was similar to Worlds Best ~ not as fine grained ~ but equally good regarding clumping and odour removal...and almost half the price!
