Hi our 2 year old cat was diagnosed at 7 months old ( we had him from a kitten) with hip dysplacia and on vets recommendation we decided to have the operation where they remove his hip sockets and he had to learn to walk again
He also had several sessions of water therapy
It was a horrible time seeing him with half his body shaved and learning to walk again but he got through it and was given a clean bill of health
We knew he would always Have a limp but a Couple of weeks ago we noticed he was limping differently and would show he wasn't happy if you stroked his back
He has been charging around like a young kitten but we took him to the vets
The vet examined him and said he had something wrong with his back in 2 places and he was in pain
So they took him straight in and sedated him and X-rayed him
We went to get the results and it turns out he has a slipped disc !
He is now on strict cage rest with meds
He has to be totally put out on Monday to have a Ct and MRI scan to see exactly how bad he is
The vets said it could be a case of he needs cage rest for 6 weeks and will be ok or he may need an operation on his spine!
that is very costly and we have to consider if we want to put him through it
We have pet insurance but it won't cover all the tests and then operation if needed
It not just a matter of cost
I'm really hoping it can be healed with the strict cage rest
But I'm also worried and very upset that he seems to be the runt of the litter and can we put him through another major operation
He is a member of our family and we love him and want what is best for him but we really don't know what to do
If he hadn't had the hip dyslpasia it wouldn't seem so bad
I don't mean to over react but I don't want him to have to spend the last few weeks of his life in a cage either
Any advice or reassurance would be grateful
Thanks
Ps he also has a problem with his nose he seems to have very small nasal cavities and the tests next week will tell us more
