I started walking Bernie on a collar today rather than a harness. I want him to get used to being led from the neck as I'm going to have to use a show lead on him in ringcraft. SOMEHOW he walks so much better on a collar!! He moves better, he stops less, when he does stop he doesn't resist as much when you want him to walk. It also doesn't bother him as much. He's forever scratching at the straps of his harness and only scratched at his collar a couple of times today. Maybe a collar is the way to go with him! He walked so lovely by my side on the way to the park and back! Do you find a collar works better for any of your dogs?

Beau walks on both, no preference as long as he gets to go When we first got him age 13 months he was very stressed out on a lead hated Lorries and would shy away when he saw one coming 200 yards away, so the harness was the best way to get him used to walking on a lead

Hey just said this on the harness thread but Cooper HATES a harness. He completely refuses to walk with a harness on ever since pigeongate. And because it took ages to get him walking again after that I just wont risk it by trying to put his harness back on again!?! He instead has lots of lovely handmade collars especially with Bostons and smoochie faced dogs in mind, from a friend of mine who has 3 Bostons.

We started Jasper off on a collar, but as soon as he got big enough we changed to a harness. He's much better on it and it's easier to get him out of molehills with it. Unfortunately he pulls so with a neck collar it chokes him.

I prefer collars, and so do my dogs I wouldn't use a harness except during lamb season when Lucy wants to kill every one she sees, so she's on a non-pull harness then.

I prefer Harnesses. Charlie Boy doesn't care but I do as he sometimes struggle to breathe when walked on the collar as he is only small and so is his neck but the vet said nothing to worry about just use the harness. Roman completely refuses to walk with the harness so I use the collar on him SarahHound - I think it depends on the dog - I wouldn't use a harness on a Greyhound, Lurcher, Whippet or any other similar breed as I think they don't need them and walk perfectly on collars

I agree it depends on the dog AL, I know many sighthound owners who prefer to use fleece lined harnesses as they irritate less and are harder to slip out of. But I also know a lot of people who walk on collars as well. Jasper is happy with either. I usually use his harness when he's going through the fields free running as he can get a bit annoyed by the tags jingling round his face. Plus I spend enough on his harnesses that I want to get the use out of them When we road walk we usually just use a collar, he doesn't seem to have a preference when walking but harnesses are more comfortable for him when running

I agree about the dog tags @charlotte but then again, I put the collar and harness on Charlie but clip the lead to the harness . Roman hates harnesses - strange dog!

Jess does not like being walked on a collar, she simply stops walking and refuses to move, in Spain she was walked on a harness so I think it's because she's not use to it. However on a harness she walks very well! She also wears her collar when on walks with her tag but has her lead clipped onto her harness.

Forgot to mention, we also feel safer walking her on a harness as she spooks easily.

Having always had labs I've always walked them on collars although with their strength I've needed to occasionally use halti head collars to Sid the training process. The only time I use a harness style is for the car seatbelts I bought them, found my last lab was great in my back seat with a belt on and these 2 are too big for a wee Astra boot and I can't afford a bigger car so they use a harness seatbelt.

Thats the type of harness I walk Beau on sometimes, one that slots into the seatbelt buckle, I don't use the halti over the nose, if they are not fitted right you can damage their eyes , too many times I see people walking their dogs and one of the poor dogs eyes is being forced shut

Amber and Holly couldn't care less about wearing their harnesses. I do know of dogs that prefer it on the collar though. Bramble, for example, walks just fine on the collar so I use that with her. However, Chester (the pup we were minding) walks much better on a harness. Every dog is different, with their own preferences!

None of my dogs have cared whether or not they wear head halters, harnessses or collars.

SOMEHOW he walks so much better on a collar!! He moves better, he stops less, when he does stop he doesn't resist as much when you want him to walk. This might only because he isn't used to walking on a collar. When we first switched Finn from a collar to a harness he didn't pull at all and it was lovely! Sadly, as soon as he got used to learning how to pull in a harness he was back to his old ways again. Hope it lasts for you though! Neither of my dogs really care what they are walked in, as long as they're walked!
