"dog specialist Cesar Millan." Pfft, yeah right!
"A dog-loving Crewkerne couple won a new puppy on a TV show" Dog-loving couple? Not if they're competing on that show!
Ridiculous.
That's all I have to say.

I think thats so sad. So many things wrong with this. 1. It's Cesar Milan. 2. WINNING a puppy?? Really??? 3. Their first dog died after flying back from filming this stupid show. Fuming!

2. WINNING a puppy?? Really??? That was what caught my attention too - remember the outrage when Keith Lemon gave away a puppy on his show Lemonaid? I wonder if there will be the same backlash when it's Cesar Millan doing it. Hope there is. Animals aren't prizes

I know. They don't even give away pet goldfish on the ring toss at fairs or things like that anymore. How can they justify giving away a dog.

His new show is all about that. He gets a rescue dog that needs to be rehabilitated and he 'trains' them to 'train' the dog. I watched it to see what the fuss was about and he has 3 singles/couples/families and gives them a series of tasks to do to see which one is most 'suitable' for the home. In other words which one is 'The Pack Leader'. I must say I never saw any Alpha Rolls although the 'PSST' and hand towards the face was used quite a lot.
It's ridiculous. I dislike him. And I dislike any shows that he does. I don't understand how he can fight science. Besides the fact that he'd be screwed if he didn't have his Pack Leader BS behind him... He also got some sort of psychology qualification, I cant find the article though.

Would you explain what this is please.

Would you explain what this is please. Alpha rolls are techniques of dog training advocated by morons to show the dog that YOU are the Dominant Pack Leader! Essentially the dog is pushed to the floor (I've seen videos of the dog being THROWN to the floor!), rolled over, often with the "trainer" or owner straddling the dog and staring it into "submission". The dog then appreciates that it's "trainer" or owner is a Strong Dominant Pack Leader and henceforth the dog will respect, love, and obey the "trainer" or owner. And if you believe THAT is a good way to train a dog - then you shouldn't have a dog! Cesar Millan, whilst having a vast following, advocates this and similarly controversial techniques (like kicking the dog) to encourage a close, loving relationship between owner and dog. I do not care for this man and his techniques.

Why would people do this? For a start Cesar Millan - really?!?! Secondly, why would you want to even set up a competition, competing for a puppy? Its an living creature not a wooden toy - jeez! This has annoyed me to be honest! Feel very sorry for the couple who lost their dog though

I like Cesar, genuinely, but giving a puppy away just isn't wise. I doubt it will be shown in Scotland though, as its illegal to give a puppy away as a prize here, but not in England/Wales. He can get in trouble if its shown up here.

I honestly like Cesar too, I just don't agree with his techniques which quite annoys me when I see them, although I personally don't think like some people and think he purposefully disciplines the dogs but we have to remember that he isn't a dog trainer he specializes in psychology with dogs and when it comes to actual training he uses some good techniques. I would never want a puppy to be given away - its just common sense that you wouldn't do it really?!?

Thanks for the explanation on Alpha rolls CollieSlave.
Hope I never come across this.
In the old days of Barbara Woodhouse it was all shouting to get dogs to do what you want, now when have the treat/reward way.
Since going to dog training it is surprising to see different techniques used....
There is the big bloke shouting pulling at his dog to get the dog to respond.
and
The lady that hardly says a word and used hands/fingers to get a result.

Sorry walkiestime, I should have explained They have no place in training, same as the dominance theory. Wolves/Dogs only seriously pin and hold when they intend to kill, so all alpha rolls really do is tell your dog that you want to kill it. But it's ok, because Cesar still loves his subordinates. I appreciate that other people like him and enjoy his shows but I can't get away with anyone who is arrogant enough not to consider the scientific evidence that PROVES Pack theory is wrong. There's so much evidence conflicting what he believes. Yes he made his fortune from dominance, but it's outdated (like Barbra Woodhouse) and has no place in modern dog training
