Gt an email about this yesterday. So sad to hear, I remember the man himself coming into the shop I had my first job at. Met him quite a few times over the years and he was always such a lovely sight in the town centre. The local Sue Ryder charity shop had a chair in the corner by the till which he often could be found on (sometimes even on the lap of a volunteer who would sit and groom him). His statue is just outside that shop, and I'm glad he got to be there to see it put up. Apparently he had been kept in for a while now with health problems so he wouldn't have been happy with that arrangement at all, having spent his whole life ruling the streets of St Andrews. He did have quite bad arthritis towards the end and I believe stomach and/or chest problems too.
Wonderful little cat and St. Andrews won't be the same without him! He made the front page in today's Courier, shows how popular he was haha.

I wonder if William and Kate ever met him? Didn't they go to St Andrews University? What I found loveliest about the whole thing about Hamish was how the whole town loved him and he was able to go wherever he wanted without fear of some f*****t thinking it would be 'fun' to hurt him which seems to often be the way a lot of society regards cats these days St Andrews must be one of the loveliest towns in the UK

They never got a statue though, St Andrews knows it's priorities haha. As for a lovely town, maybe it is for cats but dogs are not allowed into any businesses except on my last check one pub and two beer gardens. There was an unwritten rule that Hamish could go wherever he liked though, no business was allowed to turn him away, according to my old boss anyway. He was a regular in the shop I worked in while it was open (it shut down when the owner retired), we were half a pet food shop though so we had a bit of an advantage over the others we bagged up the cat food ourselves too so there was always cat treats and things lying around and he could have whatever he wanted really haha. It will be interesting to see if any other local cats will step up to follow in his footsteps. Who knows, maybe my lost Bramble will start frequenting his old haunts haha. I can only hope!

It saddens me when I hear of cats still being treated badly and regarded as pests or vermin.....sadly living up here in rural Northumberland they still have that prehistoric attitude in a lot of cases
