spider, I've heard that it goes back to being a kitten as when feeding from mum they knead her to stimulate milk and continues as a comfort thing later in life. Don't know if its true or not.

spider my two have got a toy stuffed cat that they are always suckling and kneading. It was my hubby's but now it belongs to the cats. the stuffed cat is called Rusty. I will see if I can send you a picture of them all. they have had Rusty since we brought them home over two years now and they still suckle Rusty. I have to pop Rusty in the washing machine when he becomes smelly

All of my cats do this and it is as tonib said. I love to see a cat kneading, it's so sweet. Blackberry does it when she comes to sit on my lap and she sucks and dribbles on the throw on the sofa at the same time.
swoots- that is so cute that your 2 have a soft toy cat that they suckle and knead.

I'll be rather miffed if they HAVE got fleas on them I've given them a thorough check over and I cannot find any traces of flea dirt but Neil is taking them to work tonight anyway to put them in his big industrial washing machines so I think I'll spray them with household flea spray, put them in black bags and stick them in the car.....if there's any eggs or tiny fleas in there they SHOULD be zapped after that LOL@gillycat. Good idea about washing it. No way can you put it in normal washing machine. It was strange that these fleas appeared from because it was while after we had it when they came. Oh well something we will never find out

Pets I own: Rosie a Maine Coon, Red and Cream.Aged 4 year in (May2014), a BIG quiet girl, and TiaMaria a Black Russian years on (Nov 2013) who is amazing fun.
Sadly Tia was killed in July 2014 by a car.
My son has Parkinsons and lives 2 miles from me. I got him RILEY a black stray 2year old in February 2014, but from a rescue 14 months ago.Very involved with him !
Pebbles age unknown, thrown out of a car, went to my daughter. Also involved with him ! ALL are adorable and so different.
Now (OCT 2014) have a kitten called Lilyana. She looks like her Mum, a Russian Blue. Her Dad is a Rag Doll. She was born on 24/07/2014....the day my darling Tia was killed on the road.
This was meant to be and she is helping me grieve for Tia. Lilyana is delightful.Rosie is now taking to her

I treated myself to a white sheepskin rug for the side of the bed. When it became grubby I DID put it in the washing machine. OOPS...big mistake. It has gone all tangled. I hope to attempt to de-tangle it at least partly then give it to the next kitten I get. They love to kneed fur so look out for an old fur hat or coat.

Haha spider you are lucky Moonbeam was doing it to a cushion and not you! My cat Smudgie LOVES kneading my leg/arm/stomach/anything and it's super sore! I always thought it was something they do when happy, it reminds them of suckling I think which was a time they were really safe and happy as has been said. My cat Bramble, before I moved to Germany and stole the cover, would always knead on a fluffy cover I have and also suck on it hahaha, she'd make the same noises suckling kittens would make and the blanket would always be a bit soggy afterwards, but it was so cute! The cover isn't very thick though so quite often I'd get stabbed in the process.

I find grooming sheepskin rugs with slicker brushes makes them lovely and fluffy again. It's actually how I got taught to use a slicker brush in dog grooming class before we were allowed to use them on dogs (and I wish everyone else did too, as I constantly see even professional groomers using it wrong and hurting the dog).
