Looking for some help here, my tom cat Oscar absolutely hates the back of the neck flea treatment. So much so he recognises when we are opening the packet and will dart out the room. We have tried opening the packet in another room from him, but he notices when we start stroking the back of his neck that something is up and darts away - and if someone is holding him still he'll wriggle and bite to be let go. He also won't wear a collar so collar treatment for him would be useless. This becomes a real problem in summer as he likes catching baby rabbits who harbour all sorts of bugs! Any ideas/help would be hugely appreciated!

There's an injection you can get from your vet for him. If he's as bad as you say he is, then maybe this might be something to think about. And welcome to the forum jess, I hope you enjoy it here. I'm cazypops and have a Parsons Russell Terrier called Jasper and two moggies called Flirty and Bandit, I look forward to reading more about Oscar.

Poor Oscar, I know those rabbit mites our ginger, Roman, managed to bring a bunny home (alive) it got its revenge as his head was a mass of moving black spots! Frontline zapped them. So I can appreciate your need to make sure Oscar doesn't get any parasites. Ours are not fans of the spot-ons & we have a couple who run a mile but luckily once we've got them we can just get the treatment on. I haven't heard of the injection cazypops so I'm very interested in that answer. A bit of googling found this link which might be helpful www.fleafree.co.uk/flea_treatment/en/index.shtml jess. Nice to hear from you again

Nice to hear from you again It was a friend of mine tonib, when she took on one of her cats, If I remember right it was a stray, it was riddled with fleas so she took it to the vets and he gave it an injection. She said when she got home, she was sat with the cat on her knee and watched as the fleas jumped off the cat. Now I'm paraphrasing, but yes she got and injection. That or she was pulling my leg.

How easy is your cat to tablet? MSD Animal Healthy will be bringing out oral flea and tick protection called Bravecto. They have just brought out a dog version, and are in the process of getting a licence for the cat version. Bravecto is unique in that it offers 12 week protection rather than the usual 8 week flea/4week tick protection of fipronel based products such as Frontline, Effipro r etc.
So if your cat is easier to tablet then you could bear that in mind.
Alternatively you could start teaching your cat to accept spot on treatments with mock pipettes or syringes?
What products have you used? Some pet shop products are not only ineffective but also the pets might show a'get it of my back quick'reaction.

The product is Program, doesn't kill fleas but stops them breeding. So it's ok for cats that tolerate being bitten by fleas, but not good for cats allergic to flea bites.

I went to the vets today and had a chat with them actually, they pointed out the Bravecto for dogs and said hopefully the cat version would be out soon - he is much better with tablets as we normally just hide them in his food and he's too greedy to notice.
At the moment we use frontline which we've never had problems with - we're going to try putting it on him again tonight, will be a bit more persistent this time!

If he's greedy then why not let him go hungry a bit then get him eating something really tasty from your hand whilst 'fuffing' around the back of his neck. Would that work?

We've tried that before but he knows as soon as you go to the back of his neck and 'fluff' the fur that the treatment is coming and will bolt outside/bite. We used to be able to pin him down from behind while he was eating from his bowl and treat him then but he's caught on to that now too. Too smart!

Welcome to the forum. I sympathise with you as I have 7 cats to do and they all react like your cat - it doesn't matter how quietly you approach them with the dreaded flea treatment, they have a sixth sense about it!! They react as if I'm putting hot water on them. You could ask your vet to administer the flea treatment if you happen to have an appointment for something else at the same time - of course, your cat will just sit there and let the vet do it - cats are like that!

Success! We finally managed to treat him last night but I needed the help of 2 other people to do it hah! He's not been home all day so he's clearly not happy with us but at least it's done now!

One of my cats Harvey hates it so much too. It's weird, as my other cat is more sensitive, but tolerates the Frontline okay. And I do it monthly, it's a challenge. How do they know it's coming before the pipette is even opened?! I can give pills okay, so would be glad of a tablet form that works as well as Frontline and Advantage, as one of mine has a flea bite allergy.

Yes, fingers crossed a tablet flea treatment for cats is available soon as this would save so much stress!
