Hi there, am feeling sad Have just come back from the vet where one of my 2 year old female gerbils breathed her last. She had a respiratory infection and I think the upset of a journey and an injection too was just too much for her. Now I have a sad and lonely looking girl on her own wondering where her chum is . The thing I'm wondering is, as I don't wish to get another female (females are so tricky to introduce, I've done it and never again!!) in the long term would it work putting the remaining female with my 2 males? I've read that after about 2 years both males and females aren't fertile (not sure if that's true or not?) In any case, would it be a social disaster? I'm going to put the cages side by side so she can see the boys, but obviously she'll miss all the other play, grooming etc. What do you think? Many thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum jd. Sorry to hear of the loss of your gerbil I'm sorry I don't have any experience of gerbils so can't help but there are members here who have gerbils, hopefully they should be able to help you.

I'm sorry, I have absolutely no knowledge of gerbils. I have a friend who has gerbils though so I will ask her.

Thanks to both of you for replying anyway. I have a cat too and a fab greyhound ( I see I am not alone loving them!) She's called doggy dumplings and the cat is cassie cat pants. I think I might be a bit mad :-) Hopefully someone will know about this stuff to inform me.

Personally i wouldn't risk it. Keeping them side by side would be a much better option. Not only could you end up with more vets bills but could also mean the end to the boys friendship. Lots of interaction with you and tons of fun tunnels and wooden chews should see your little girl adapting to a life alone. Not ideal but in my mind better than serious injuries.
