Had to take Millie to the vets this morning. She has an aural haemotoma. The inside of her ear flap is swollen and filled with blood. They drained it today, but it’s already quite full again. She’ll start steroids on Thursday, but have to wait for the metacam to get out her system which is a nuisance as it’s time it’s uncomfortable for her but nothing being done. Poor girl will be in a right state, her joints will hurt with not metacam and she’ll have a heavy swollen ear She’ll have to have it drained again at the end of 5he week and back for a review a week after starting the tablets. Poor Millie, it will be hard for her without her metacam. My Aztec had an aural haemotoma twice.

I’d never heard of it before! I looked it up on the internet, but can’t find anything about these tablets and the condition. Sure it must do something but was hoping to get a few opinions on how successful it is, but no luck. Millie will also have to have the op if this doesn’t work. She has had the cartrophen and it did help. Only I was told there was a limit to the number of times they could have it. The first lot she had has worn off now I think, but thought I’d wait until she’s a bit worse before having any more. She seems quite good in herself. Really grumpy every time she sees another dog, or even person at the moment, when we’re out, but other than that she’s wanting to walk and train etc. milliepup04 , I'm glad to see that Millie did well on the Cartrophen, but I'm confused when you say she can only have it for a limited time. Our Jasper has been on it for the last 6 years and will be on it for life. He just gets 1 injection every 6 month, his next one is in two weeks time. We chose to keep him on it as the vet told us it's not addictive.

Some dogs require a top up dose every 6 months but some dogs only need a course of 5 weeks and they'll be fine for a few years. However with some dogs it doesn't work at all, it's really luck of the draw. Cartrophen is not an analgesic though and a single dose on it's own is unlikely to help in the long term. If you noticed a difference after the first injection then I'd certainly try for at least 3 weeks and see how it goes. And you can't give any pain relief during the course of injections in case they hide any effects. Never heard of giving tablets for aural haematoma's. We've always gave pain relief and then operated on them after 10 days. I worked with one vet who used to put in like 20 stitches in the ear, another who'd put in a small drain and another who used 3 to 4 buttons. The buttons always looked so funny as this particular vet liked to use nice bright colours!

I don’t know cazypops! That’s just what I was told!! I’ll definitely ask again when I take her on Saturday. Last time she had 3 injections over a 3 week period. I think that was in May and it definitely helped. She can start the other tablets tomorrow. Thanks bextull. It does seem strange, everyone I’ve spoken to and from what I’ve read online, nobody seems to treat with tablets. Apparently they still might not work. I’m going to ask on Saturday what they’re actually meant to do. Poor girl had a really bad night last night. She just couldn’t settle and wouldn’t stop panting. She even had a couple of accidents in the house, which is absolutely unheard of! She was housetrained in 2 weeks and hadn’t had an accident since. I was awake and she didn’t ask to go out. Even if I wasn’t awake she’d normally bark in my face and let me know!! I was up with her best part of the night, trying to get her to settle. It worked eventually but horrible to see her so distressed. She’s been tired today, and is clearly uncomfortable. She’s limping and very grouchy. Still trying to act herself though bless her.

Fortunately Millie seems a bit more settled tonight, though still not herself. Hopefully she’ll get some more rest.

Anybody got any tips/advice on adapting back to normal life after being on night shifts? Mainly sleeping patterns. I've just finished 2 weeks of nights and I got used to them with no problems at all. Unfortunately, now it seems that my entire concept of time has been messed up. Despite getting up at normal times and being back to my normal routine, I was more awake last night at 4am than I was at 2pm! I'm not back to work until Saturday so I've nothing to actually do during the day at the moment which is probably part of the problem but I didn't get to sleep until 6am last night and slept through all my alarms this morning so it's not a great habit to be in.

Had a good week this week. My uncle has taken my mum, sister and nan to Germany for the week, so Millie, Rumple and I have had the place to ourselves! Been so nice not having to rush everywhere. We didn’t go out for a walk until 7am today - we’re usually back by then! Been on nice walks in different places, done lots of training and frequented dog friendly pubs with my grandad and Joe!! Rumple’s knackered now haha! They come back tomorrow evening, so making the most of today.
Millie went to the vets again yesterday and he drained her ear again. It was much smaller than the time before and he’s given her some more tablets. Hopefully won’t need doing again but will have to wait and see. He’s given her some medication for her incontinence, which is working a bit, though she had a couple of accidents the night before last. Poor girl. She’s not been too bad in herself, but I know she’s not 100% right. Still wants to go on long walks and get involved with a bit of training etc, which is a good sign.
