What were their names before you got them, and did you keep it or change it?
(Randomly popped into my head when I was out walking the dogs! Thought it could be a good thread!)

Out of my lot, only Todd has kept his name. He was named Todd by the rescue, and at the time of adoption, we hated it, and decided we were going to change it. However when we picked him up, he didn't suit anything else! He was a Todd and only a Todd Lucy's name was 'May' at the rescue centre. Not a dogs name in my opinion! She was born in May, so that's how she got that. Katy was 'Daisy', which is a joke, she's the least daisy like dog I've known! Not sweet and delicate in the slightest! Lucky and Rigsy were strays, so they didn't have names. Skye was 'Toots', which is cute, but I thought she deserved a pretty name, for a pretty puss! Islay and Jura were adopted together, they were 'Poppy' and 'Pippa', but I wanted to call some animals after islands for a long time. Arran was 'Smokey'. Ailsa was 'Bunny'. Lewis had no name! Ringo, Dandelion, Gremlin and Minstrel were from pet shops, so those were their first names. Milo was 'Mr Darcy' hated that for him! Plus as he lives with Ringo it had to be something that ended in O. Harriet the hamster was 'Holly', but I'd already had a Holly!

We kept the names when we got them. Lexie was a private rescue so that made sense. Osiris & Penny were called that when they came into the rescue by their previous owner whilst not sure if Roman was called that before or the rescue called him that. He definitely knew his name though from the day we got him Mind you Roman suits him as he the one that roams the most!!

Not sure if this really counts but hey ho. (Because he isn't a rescue) Wilson's breeder named him Frankie. We thought about keeping it as it did sort of suit him (although we weren't particularly a fan of the name!) we liked Wilson, and that is what we had planned to call him - but then we couldn't decide between the two! Anyhow, Wilson came in and the first thing he did was walk over to the tennis ball with Wilson written on it! That was it, he had decided his own name. And Wilson he is. So that's the story behind his name!!!

Mrs.Woman wasn't an official rescue but it's what I say. She was the neighbours cat but they seemed to have forgotten she exists. I think her name was Daisy but when we fist took her in we couldn't remember and I thought new start new name. Mam came up with Mrs.Woman which was a welcome change from Scabby and Smelly, what she used to call her.
A while back I took on my cousins syrian hamster called Smudge. He had won it at a fair and things only got worse from there (he's a complete imbecile don't get me started or I'll never stop). I kept the name but we all called him Spud as well. He passed soon after, his teeth were very overgrown, the wheel he came with was too small and when I got him a larger one he didn't know what to do with it and by the stench of his urine I suspect he had kidney trouble.

Our boy Kidder was called Geoffrey!!!!! Apparently they were on a 'G' week when he was taken in. Hilarious.
when we went to look at him in the pound, my other half said "see you later kidder" when we left (he sometimes calls his mates kidder) and we decided after that it suited him. Plus there's no other dogs called kidder really is there. The funny thing is that there's an old saying 'you can't kid a kidder' and that is definitely true of him, so he absolutely has the right name.
our other dog wasn't a rescue but she needed a name along the same lines so we called her Babs as that is a well used term of endearment kind of name here in bristol.

We didn't change Beau's name as decided it suited him, although at first we wanted to because it sounded too much like no. Apart from that couldn't decide on another name that sort of suited him LOl

Bryn was originally called Scooby by the slobs who owned him first. When he went to the rescue place they called him Rudi (I believe Hitler had a GSD called Rudi) but we felt that Bryn suited him, and he was born and brought up in Wales so a Welsh name seemed sensible. Our previous rescue BC, Nell, was called Jade by a previous family who, for a short period, took her from the rescue centre but returned her. I suspect that, given her upbringing from birth for the first year, she probably didn't have a name - she was ignored and neglected. I think a name change for a rescue animal is a good thing - particularly if the original name had bad associations from ill-treatment. Nell was a very pretty, little collie and closely resembled a champion working BC from years ago - called Little Nell: hence our choice of name.

My Bramble who is a girl was a boy called Milo (well, they said she was a boy!).
Kai Ruki, although not a rescue was named Gin Ricky by his breeder.
An interesting thread.

My last lab was a rescue from sspca, we named him taz coz when we had him in the exercise area he ran round and round like the cartoon Tazmanian devil! We received a call about 2 months later saying the original owners had been found and wanted him back but understood he was legally ours so if we wanted to give him back they wanted him. I would have never forgiven my family if they had given him back, I was only 15! Never did find out his last name or really wonder.
my tortoise belonged to a friend before I took him and was called Tom and I've kept his name. Everyone laughs at Tom the tortoise but he should have had a speedy name, he's rapid!

Buddy was a private rescue and had 2 names, Bailey and Bandit. OH named him Buddy. Mary came with her name I wanted to change it to Amber or Poppy but OH didn't like them and Mary was unusual so we kept it.

Our two cats I took in after they moved out of their house when they got a dog and her husband wasn't interested in them. Flirty ( a tom ) was called Debbie and I changed his name because 1) I didn't know his name then and 2) every time he saw my car pull up he'd run up the street to meet me roll on his back, so I nicknamed him Flirty Girty which got shortened to flirty of Flirts. Bandit also from the same house was called Felix, she followed Flirts in and when I use to give them a bit of ham or chicken she would grab it and run out with it, then as soon as she'd eaten it she'd come back in and pinch whatever I given Flirty too. So that was why I changed her name from Felix to Bandit.
Now Bandit has gone from being almost feral to being the most loving puss you could ever have the pleasure in meeting. Oh and they were both riddled with fleas too.

Whenever I see Roman do that roll on the back greeting, which he does quite a bit, I'll want to call him Flirty Girty now, it really describes it cazypops, particularly as he smiles with it as well! Trouble is it just doesn't suit him!

Gemma our late F.C.R. kept her beautiful name,I always thought we were meant to have her as I love the name and intended calling the dog we adopted Gemma. Skip was Chip, tried to get used to it but couldn't,and thought better choose similar sounding name.It still felt a bit strange for a while,as our dogs have always been given human names.I thought Jim,but that went down like a lead balloon. So Skip gets called Skipster,Skipper, and a few others...and answers to them all,he seems to think it's some joke.
