My wife and I decided to go to Edinburgh Zoo last Friday-I saw quite a few of my family there (hanging from branches) some marvelous and beautiful animals on show. I have to admit I have mixed feelings about zoos etc....on the one hand we are keeping animals locked up, but on the other I see no other option for some of them as they are so endangered mostly through the fault of man via hunting and habitat destruction etc, that the only way to preserve these beautiful creatures is through conservation with zoos, wildlife parks etc. I am not intending this thread to be a soap box area- so please do not post any animal liberation stuff here. 10 by T1NGLER, on Flickr Koala 12 by T1NGLER, on Flickr Penguins 30 by T1NGLER, on Flickr more pengies 33 by T1NGLER, on Flickr this is the meet and greet committee at Penguin Rock (give him a fish and ur in) 34 by T1NGLER, on Flickr no visit to a zoo would be complete with out seeing these little devils 34 by T1NGLER, on Flickr one of my favourite exhibits 44 by T1NGLER, on Flickr and a beautiful kitty 6 by T1NGLER, on Flickr then we had this cheeky chappie 9 by T1NGLER, on Flickr the sun bears were amazing 16 by T1NGLER, on Flickr some of my own family in the following pics-although I'd rather have these than what I've got 26 by T1NGLER, on Flickr 20 by T1NGLER, on Flickr the gorgeous Zebras 3 by T1NGLER, on Flickr there were many more but too many pics to upload, we really went to see the Giant Pandas, but alas they were both sleeping when we went to visit them-typical. All in all we had a good day and a bonus that the weather stayed good for our visit.

Some of them behave worse than animals it was a good day, apart from when just after we arrived and were waiting for the transport to the top of the zoo, I said to the wife "Fancy and ice-cream?" went to get my wallet out and couldn't find it.....ran back to car and found it lying on the dashboard in the car!!!!! Lucky or what???

Fantastic photos. I feel the same about zoos as you do. I hope none of your relatives see this forum, hehe I don't think they'd be too happy! Gave me a good laugh though

What lovely pics you got I'm not 100% against zoo's, and I think some do some wonderful work, but Edinburgh Zoo I found to be a very sad place. I went just before the panda's arrived, and I'd love to go and see them, but I can't face going and seeing all the other enclosures. Some had me almost in tears! Have you been to the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig? Now that's worth a visit, although you're so close I'm sure you have been.

Good pics, my friends went to the zoo not long after the pandas arrived and one said he wanted to prod the pandas as one lay there sleeping and all he could see was its bum!
I was never much of a fan but see both sides of the argument. Took my nephews about 7yrs ago when I lived in Edinburgh and they had a great time. If you've never been its some walk around the place, from the entrance to the back its a hill, took Nathan and Liam and Nathan was about 6 at the time and kept saying his legs we too sore to walk anymore.
Keep meaning to go to the one at Newtonmore, we were at aviemore during the week but took the train there and back so just stayed local, last time we were up was just before the polar bear arrived there, don't think its there anymore

But we had a great day out none the less and got some great video footage of the little monkeys horsing around the penguins in their enclosure

Nice pics, I'm with the general view on here with zoos. I went to dublin zoo last week, I need to upload pictures but I'm having computer troubles. I'd love to see leopards and giant pandas, Dublin only has red pandas as cute as they are and snow leopards.

I went in 2010 when Mercedes was there, I'm sure she died not long after, but you could see she was aged.

Glad you had a good day out! I quite like Edinburgh zoo though I admit some enclosures leave a lot to be desired. I haven't been in a couple of years but apparently they have done a lot of work, more recently the penguin and koala enclosures. Remember you can always check out the panda cam.... www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/pandacam.htmland the penguin cam through their website!! Might be worth a look ps my favs are the painted hunting dogs!
