You have not hit a nerve with me at all. I just think there are loads more important things to worry about. To complain about and to try and stop than one ad. I think the ad did exactly what it was meant to do while also advertising Marmite, it made people think about animal cruelty, about what a lot of people do with their pets they grow tired with or don't like any more. But people decided to just complain about, may be they didn't get it?!? I agree with Dave Norris, I think it was very clever and hopefully made people think and do something to help.
heartpawprints you know what? The more I think about it, I think your right. I think they always planned to give money, make a point with the ad and give money to help unwanted animals. Shock people into doing something, lets hope all the people who complained donate and help too.

lets just agree to differ on the subject, as we're all animal lovers here. I don't want to fall out with anyone over a jar of stinky sandwich spread

In a way, good or bad, the advert worked... We're all talking and thinking about Marmite! That's what advertising is supposed to achieve at the end of the day.

Regardless of whether the ad is in poor taste, I resent the fact that the controversy has undoubtedly made this advertising campaign FAR more effective than it would otherwise be and may well have resulted in more increased sales than a non-controversial ad. In addition the donation has attracted some good publicity for them. Irrespective of what they originally intended, I'll bet they're delighted with the overall effects of the ad. And there may be some knock-on benefits to animal charities: who can say?
