How do you all feel about animal testing? There's a good debate

I understand where people are coming from if they agree with it, but I don't like it. Surely there are other ways of testing?

I loathe and detest animal testing in all its forms. However, it is particularly odious when used solely to increase sales and hence profits. There are major companies like Unilever, Nestle, Danone and Yakult who force-feed animals to obesity or inject them with chemicals and/or bacteria to make them sick - and then feed their 'healthy' products to these poor blighted animals to attempt to bring about improvements to the creatures' conditions. If an improvement results, then they trumpet the health giving properties of their foods in their ads: they do, however, seem reticent about revealing the source of their health-giving claims. AND they are doing this barbarous testing to boost flagging sales of products that have been on the market for years. It is a purely profit boosting exercise.

Agree with you CS. I don't use anything tested on animals, everything I use comes from Superdrug's Own range, which is all BUAV approved

I am pro them (cruelty free). I am disgusted with Cheryl Cole for promoting L'Oreal as I believe they have the worst animal cruelty/testing record. I use and sell Neal's Yard products as they are ethical and organic.

I have never been a fan of animals used as test subjects-it's cruel and should be stopped. If these companies need to test their products it should be on humans....... pedophiles would make ideal test subjects as they are the lowest form of life and should have no rights.

I hate animal testing - humans can say whether or not they are happy to be used for testing but animals are just forced and left innocent.
I don't use ANYTHING tested on animals - I would feel guilty if I did so.

When it comes to thing like cosmetics I don't go near cruelty free stuff. I went on a major research bender last year on finding out all about it. I can't exactly say I'm innocent of using ANY product that was tested on animals. Major corporations like Unilever, and Nestle make it hard to know what is and what isn't. And just speaking in terms or cosmetics L'oréal also owns Éstee Lauder and Mac. I think that harming animals just for cosmetics is appalling, and not necessary for almost every country, certainly not in Europe. But that is where the problem lies, as far as I know finished products or ingredients can't be tested on animals in Europe. There is very little stopping companies from testing in a country that condones such cruelty. Medicine is a tricky subject so I don't have much of an opinion on that. I like companies like LUSH, video linked below, because they make a stand against it . People could go down the route of ' what about the meat you eat, or your leather shoes/couch/football ?'. I think meat is ok because in my opinion it is needed. My sister is a vegetarian and she is constantly sick, I know it isn't always the case and some people can or have to be vegetarians with no ill effect. Shoes and furniture I'm sort of undecided on. What are some opinions regarding animal testing for pet foods? One of the reasons that I don't like feeding Royal Canin is that the test on animals but my parents are a different story and I'm not in a position to by the food myself so I get no say but that's a different story altogether. I think this is a good video to explain the law side easily for cosmetic testing. Oh look, another essay. I am quite passionate about this topic.

I checked my e-mail just after I posted and what did I find? A petition against vivisection. I'll share it in case you want to sign it. www.stopvivisection.eu/

Ok just to throw something into the debate with no comment on rights or wrongs of anyone's beliefs.
If you don't use products tested on animals do you apply the same rules to medicines?

See I'm never sure of medicines. I don't like testing of any sorts, and to be honest, I like so few people in the world I'd be quite happy if there were no medicines. However, my Mother relies heavily on medication and I know without it she, or I maybe, wouldn't be here. So I'm on the fence. In an ideal world, they would have found another way.

I hate to say it but I think if it came to it I would, I have to say I'm no matyr. The thing with medicines is, it saves lives. In most cases makeup doesn't.

It is a difficult thing with medicines as I am on prescription meds and need to take them. I can't bear the thought of any animal testing but I am totally against it for make up of any kind. I do know they use human guinea pigs for some medicines. The funny thing is I am vegan and today I inadvertently had dairy and have been suffering for it ever since. I am much healthier vegan. It works for me. I know it is not for everyone but I personally love animals far too much to eat them or any by products of them.

I completely agree with judypops, however, makeup never saves lives (that I am aware......). It is an accessory not a medience.

I completely agree with judypops, however, makeup never saves lives (that I am aware......). It is an accessory not a medience. What I meant by saying 'in most cases makeup doesn't' is that for some people makeup can be all they feel they have and is a creative outlet. Some people can be so self conscious and unhappy that it's all that keeps hem hanging in until it gets better. No very common but it can happen.
