Like scallywag, we don't insure but have money put aside for any large vet bills. We got at least one of the cats with known problems which of course wouldn't be insured & one that was 8 & hence a lot of the companies wouldn't start her insurance, so we have decided to make sure we have enough money put aside for any vet/specialist bill we can think of, which we luckily can.
Having said that I would recommend insurance to other owners who don't have problems to start with.

Amazing how many people dont seem to insure, only about 3 maybe 4 have logged insurance cost. Some imsurance might come out later in the month. Since my dogs are technically family dogs my mum pays for their insurance goes halfers on bags of food but everything else is me

scallywag, I totally agree It was just an observation not a criticism. Wonderful you have a savings account but its heart stopping the price of some vets bills. Someone I know of has just had their pet undergo a £5000 operation!! Insurance covers the majority I believe!! I have a savings account too but it is a shared one between me and the dogs. I must try and save more though!

Not taken as criticism caz2golden by me anyways, that person was indeed lucky, we ended up with a bill twice that with our last Springer, fortunately we were in a position to be able to pay it, mind you that was over 6 months of treatment, and had to pay as we went. Not sure why after that incident, we didn't take out insurance when we got Beau, nowt so queer as folk

That surprised me too, although maybe it depends on different companies and it will come out at different times of the month. Mine is within the first week, but maybe other companies do it later in the month.

And you'd still need to find some more...

And you'd still need to find some more... Yeah I was about to type that. Not wanting to be negative or anything but that could go in one lot of treatment. Last year when Cooper found himself at the referral vets in Newmarket we were told if he had to have all the tests it would be £1'500. and if he had all the test that would probably mean he would need another £1000 just for the first lot of treatment!!! I hate paying out for insurance each month but I think it's worth it for life cover. Just say!!

Jasper is insured, just I don't know the exact amount or date I think it's around £28 so ill add it into the general. If savings work for people I think it's brilliant, I just feel safer with insurance

I have savings too, I opened a savings account. But I'm the first to admit I've dipped into it more than once for various things not animal related, so I'm glad I have the insurance as a back up

I dont really have enough in it for dogs and me if something big happened!!

I have quite a lot in my savings account my parents set up for me! They make me save up half of the money I get over my childhood for adulthood and beyond. I have been doing this throughout my childhood and am very pleased I did so!

That's very sensible BT. With uni costing £9000 a year + living. Then once you have a permanent job you have to consider buying house, a car ...... You could do with a really big nest egg to call on once you get to 18.
I also had savings as a child but amazing how much gets eaten up when getting off the ground such as the above.
However if it is savings for being an adult then its not available for current use!!
