My partner and myself are finally hopefully going to move from our flat to a hous e so having been discussing the possibility of getting cats What we can't decide is whether to get a regular domestic cat or maybe devon rex, balinese or javanese cats.
What is everyones view? Suggestions?

Depends what you're looking for! In my opinion, nothing beats going to a rescue and choosing one that needs a home. The cat rescues are bursting with cats, nationwide, and you're sure to find one you like there. There's even pedigrees coming into rescues these days due to the recession, people simply don't have much money to care for them anymore. If you're set on a breed, it really depends what you're looking for in a cat. Some are more independent, and not so happy to sit and be cuddles, whereas others will want to be with you 24/7. I like Devon Rex, but I know nothing of the other breeds. I have 3 lovely rescue moggies can't recommend them more.

Whereabouts are you? Scotland I assume? SSPCA usually has cats, and Cats protection are great. I got one from them last year, she was £40 adoption. She'd been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped

If you're going for rescue cat(s) then don't go with preconceived ideas of what you want, they're usually blown out of the window as you find the one(s) that appeal to you. However do talk to the rescue about the cat's history, likes, dislikes & needs.
However there is one criteria that I think you need to consider before you look & that is indoor or outdoor? There are some cats (those with FIV) who can only be homed as indoor cats but so long as that is the case they live quite normal lives. Also there are some cats who would only be happy with outdoor access, even if that is only in a run. If you can't provide safe outdoor access or a run then those cats would not be for you. By safe I don't mean they have to be confined to a garden (ours aren't) but that, if they can go beyond the garden they're not very close to a busy/main road. You can't eliminate all risks but you can consider them.
Good luck in finding both your new home & new housemate(s). Let us know how it goes.

I agree with Toni.
I've never considered a breed. I've always had moggies from a rescue centre. One of my three is outside all day long but I have a safe garden. Good luck. I'm sure you will find the right one(s).

Hi and welcome to the forum. It's great that you are thinking of getting cats and I think as some suggested that rescue cats are a good idea as there are so many of them at the moment - all cats there deserve a second chance of a loving forever home.
I have 7 cats! I got to 3 and thought that was enough. My oldest cat was a feral kitten from a cat rescue centre. I had a Maine Coon kitten at the same time and another Maine Coon kitten 2 years later. The next year along came Kali, a young pregnant stray - I ended up keeping her and 2 of her kittens. The next year along came another stray, my big ginger and white boy.
If you go to a rescuce centre it would be nice to adopt a mum cat and 1 or 2 of her kittens. Kittens are usually easy to find homes for but the mums are not. That way you know that they are all going to get on together.
Good luck and let us know what you choose.
