Both of my Maine Coons have never bothered to sit on laps until recently. Kai Ruki started it first and he has become very affectionate and head-butts my hands - I wasn't very impressed when he did that to me last night and I was holding a cup of tea, which I tipped down the front of me top! I nodded off in front of the tv the other night and when I woke up Kai Ruki was snuggled up to my side and Kiba-Khan was on my lap - that is a miracle! Then last night he sat on my lap again - at last, I only had to wait until he was 6. I don't know what has made them do this now but I am so pleased - just Bramble and Toffee to go and I will have 7 lap cats.

Ooh great news. My Maine Coon cross likes to be fussed on her terms so is on and off with her affection. She also head butts when she is on your lap and has decided she would like her head rubbed!!

That's great Jenny. They've grown up, I've heard that MCs aren't fully grown until they're 5 so it must be that as adults they don't mind being seen to want attention - they've grown out of the teenage years Mind you you might land up having to find a way to get a bigger lap at this rate! I know just what you mean about the head butt, that's Lexie's habit & I have received the odd drink over me as a result its either that or she paws at you for attention - or steal the food from your hand/mouth

He has been having a growing spurt recently but I think he still has a lot of growing to do as his paws still look too big for him! Had the cats on my lap again last night and along came Kali, Blackberry and Willow's mum, my regular lap cat, and she squeezed herself onto my chest and almost sat on my face - she was glaring at the others as if to say "mine, not yours". I couldn't stop laughing as I couldn't see the tv at all. So, your right Toni, I need a bigger lap.

Mark's comment was if you haven't got room for all the cats & a laptop then you need a bigger lap!!!! Lexie isn't so much a lap cat as a laptop cat she much prefers to lay on the sofa with her front on the laptop keyboard!!! She's often on the PgUp PgDown End keys so stopping me moving the cursor or scroll on the screen!! She gets upset if I try to move the paws & retaliates by getting up & walking across the keyboard often by the power button!!

That's great Jenny, it must be a Maine Coon thing as our Paris has only started coming to sit on my lap and want cuddles and fuss since last year, she is 9 in November. Prior to this she was very wary and stand offish and would only be stroked in the grooming room or at arms length anywhere else.

Well I had an exciting incident yesterday which made me think of this thread. Bailey the Maine Coon cross often jumps on my lap while I work on the main computer at my desk (I work from home), it's usually the only time she will sit happily for a lengthy belly rub. So she decided to jump from the scratch post on to my lap with her claws out while I had a very hot cuppa tea in my hand. I shouted out with surprise and because 8 cat claws digging in to your thighs through thin jog pants does hurt. This mind Bailey jump up and hit my arm with the tea and I watched the tea go up out of the cup. This made me jump up as I tried to stop the hot liquid going on Bailey and the keyboard. This made Bailey jump up and land about a meter away next to Cooper the dog who was asleep on the futon sofa behind me. He wake with a start and nearly fall off the pile of cushions he had made a bed in. We all needed a sit down and a big fuss after that one.
