I stopped giving him his Metacam, it gave him diarrhoea. He just doesn't realise he can't run and jump like he used to.

Oddly I was only having a conversation with Ajax about Metacam & its side effects two days ago. Her vets advised to give one her cats Metacam for some inflammation but after explaining that the cat gets diarrhoea/vomiting when taking it the vet agreed it wasn't a good idea so prescribed steroids (prednisolone) instead. All of her cats seem to get diarrhoea with Metacam.
Mine don't seem to be affected that way, although Roman did after he was diagnosed with diabetes (it could have been any of his other meds or just all the changes) & despite no problem before the vet decided that stopping it might be a good idea as we were having trouble stabilising his blood glucose levels. The vet did say that Meloxicom (the active ingredient in Metacam/Loxicom) is known to have diarrhoea as potential side effect. The only reason it was stopped for Penny & Osiris was because they had kidney disease which it is contraindicated for.
As to the jumping Roman had some trouble but started using chairs to get on to the dining table (his medicines vet table!) But it was amazing that despite the odd fall (not quite making the full height jump to get his weak back leg on) or hauling himself up with the strength of his front legs, he could get on the kitchen worktop on the scrounge for food!!!

Metacam from what I remember seems to be hard on kidneys but perhaps they have improved it and it doesn't gave that side effect anymore I ramber when boomsey was a kitten he had a bad knock on his head he hit a coffee table underneath with his head gave himself a terrible bang started behaving very punch drunk vets said treatement could give him kidney problems in later life what does one do no choice really but at 11 that's a worry but at the time we didn't have a choice

You're quite right spider, Metacam has a potential side effect which can increase the risk of a cat developing kidney disease. I believe that is only when used long term & it doesn't affect all cats. The vet warned us about it in 2010 when Penny was put on as low a dose as possible to make her arthritis more comfortable. She was aged 11 then & did eventually develop kidney disease but the question would she have done so anyway. She also developed hyperthyroidism & the 2 illnesses alone with age & not able to give her all the medicines she really should have, she could not be pilled so quality rather than quantity of life was the decision made. She still lived to just a month short of her 17th birthday! Roman was on it for a number of years for his arthritis but never developed kidney disease! Osiris was on it but when his kidney values when into the kidney disease range it was stopped & he's on Solensia (which wasn't available in Penny's days). His kidney values seem to be in the normal range now - which is another story!!

I've had Metacam/Loxicom for Jasper since he had his accident at 9 months old, (he's now 10 years old) I will only give it him if I see he's in a bit of discomfort for the same reason, and I don't give the full does for his weight, just enough to take the edge off. But he does get a bit loose when I do give it him.
I also have another painkiller for him when he's really bad called Pardale, Thankfully I don't have to use either very often.

I'd not heard of Pardale cazypops so looked it up. Apparently its only for dogs not cats. Its codeine & paracetamol. That certainly sounds like it will do the trick!
