I am a bad bad mummy again, gone to trim fur monsters nails and I have accidentally trimmed a couple too far back and made two of them bleed.
Using standard kind of clippers at the moment. I am lucky as both dogs let me do the nails with no fuss even when I do something stupid like the above!
1. What do people use to stop bleeding? I have just used some microporous tape as it was at hand! 2. Does anyone use a nail grinder and if they do is it easier to use? Is it easier to not take the nail too far back? Which ones are the better ones to get?

I don't use one however a lot of people I know use grinders (not sure what brand sorry although I have heard dremel mentioned before). They are supposed to be better and can be good for getting the quick down if its quite far up on their nails. The main problem with them though is getting the dogs used to the noise, if you've ever heard a nail grinder they make this quite low whirring noise which can irritate the ears. Plus the feeling of it as well (this is the electric grinders im talking about not a nail file for example).
I don't know products to stop bleeding, luckily don't need to do Samsons nails as they grind down naturally and his nails aren't long enough to affect his gait so we don't generally need to do them. I do his dew claws and the quick on them is low anyway so not had an issue with them

That's one thing I can't do - cut dogs' nails or cats' claws. I couldn't even do Blackberry's claws before I took her to a cat show a few weeks ago and I had to pay the veterinary nurse £9.50 to do it! I am always afraid of making them bleed.

Our vet charges £18 for nail clipping (vet or nurse) if done outside of a normal visit. As a result I've no experience of either question to pass on to Caz, sorry.

I bought a nail grinder a while ago and still haven't got round to using it! I tried it a couple of times with Alfie but he was so terrified of the vibration (not so much the noise as he's used to clippers etc) - he's usually really good with stuff that most other dogs would be scared of, so it must be pretty frightening!
I don't really have the time to spend on the baby steps it would take to get him used to it (if he ever will) so it'll probably end up on eBay! Luckily he's fine with regular clippers and they don't need doing too often - the groomer will do them too if I ask.
The reason I bought the grinder is because he has black claws so it makes me nervous to clip them, but we seem to be doing ok just taking a tiny bit off when I do them. I stand him on a hard floor to judge which ones need doing by whether or not they're close to or touching the floor - I don't touch them otherwise.

lotsofcats and tonib I cant do marios claws, he wiggles around too much and I have gotten his quick before because of this . He doesn't need his doing much either though. If we do have to do them then usually one of us has to be holding him while the other is doing the nails very quickly!

My cats' claws have never needed trimming and I only had Blackberry's done as it's required for a cat show. The veterinary nurse made it look so easy but I still haven't the confidence to try it. Like you boxerluver30, my dog's nails grind down naturally and he chews his own dew claws down.

Since I joined the Nail Maintenance for Dogs group on FB, I've been slightly obsessed with Alfies nails.
A lot of people in the group use a Dremel (8050 and 8220 are recommended).
I started off counter conditioning him to the clippers because I quicked him a couple of times in one sitting. I'm now able to use the electric file, and he seems to prefer that than the clippers.

I've never had to do Jaspers, like others have said, they grind down naturally. (digging ) I use to do my old dog Emma's. If I caught the quick I use to have an old shaving stick in the medical box that I would use to stop the bleeding. I don't know if you can still buy them though.

Cornflour to stop the bleeding. Or Trimmex, but I think that's just like cornflour.
I have a grinder, but have never used it! It's not so much the getting used to the grinder that Ellie needs, but getting used to me picking her foot up.

we've only needed to trim our cats claws as they've got older & less active. Penny was a real problem - even the mobile vet nurse & the vets had problems but I think that was due to her arthritis making her grumpy with being held or legs handled. All our 3 are now less active but we only clip Lexie's who is almost a housecat these days - she really appreciates her warmth but loves paddy pawing me & you really can feel her needle claws! I'm keeping an eye on Roman's though but so far just OK & Osiris's get clipped at the vets when he's had blood tests - for their safety before he gets clipped/blood taken as from being very peaceful he becomes a hell cat & needs sedation. He's very handy with his claws.

Was just about to say cornflour but Orpheous beat me to it (by like 3 months LOL). Did you end up getting a dremal or some other kind of grinder, Caz? I follow someone on instagram who uses a dremal and her dogs nails are literally goals! Milo's are horrendous at the moment as I cant find the clippers anywhere! The rats have probably stashed them somewhere as they steal EVERYTHING I worked with Milo to get him comfortable with the clippers, but I hate using them as I'm terrified to cut to far! So far I haven't but it still always freaks me out hahaha.

miloooox at the moment still only got the clippers! I have to say nail trimming has been an absolute nightmare for us as well. Hands down two of the best purchases we made dog-wise in the last several years were a dremel and a lickpad. The dremel is made by Oster, we got it at Walmart, I think it was around $20-30. Awesome. However our dog was more freaked out by it than the nail clippers because of the sound. So we got a lickpad for about $10 online. The lickpad is a pad with suction cups that you add peanut butter or another sticky snack and keeps your dog occupied while bathing him or cutting his nails. These 2 things were gamechangers for us. While he still doesnt like it when we grind his nails with the dremel, he is totally preoccupied licking the peanut butter from the pad to fight us. Anyway hope this helps other people with the same issue. Oh here's a good guide to the pads: Everything You Need To Know About Lick Pads For Dogs.

I'm really lucky with my dog, Jasper is a digger so grinds his own nails down.
