On Tuesday 12th September he was sick after eating some of his breakfast (ok not unheard of but was also very lethargic – didn’t go out & eat grass which he would normally do after being sick (or hiss at Lexie) he just laid on the windowsill cushion all day. So got an appointment with the vet at 5:10 pm. He was given an antibiotic injection & Vomec & to be kept in. To go back for blood tests if not OK. He wasn’t sick again but was still lethargic so the next day he was booked in for blood tests on the Thursday (no food after 10 pm & no water after 7:30 in case of any anaesthetic) He was a really good boy on the vets' examination table, really calm & they kept him in to take the bloods, then rang to ask if they could sedate him as he wouldn’t let them take the bloods – I knew he was fooling them . They rang back with the results around 12:30 & I couldn’t believe it, given his age the blood results imply he has Chronic Kidney Disease. So a gradual transition to a veterinary renal diet – he’s now fully on it but occasionally objects - & blood retest in 2 months. He also has Ipakatine (a phosphorous binder) in his food. He came to us in March 2008 with Penny. They came into the rescue from the same household (owner going into care) Penny was nearly 9 & Osiris nearly 2, & as many of you will know Penny was diagnosed with CKD in 2015 & we lost her to CKD & Hyperthyroidism in March 2016. She was initially on meds & eventually a renal diet as well. So a different order this time. Like Osiris she was fussy over her renal brands – Royal Canin & Kattovit were the only acceptable ones. In Penny’s case she would have the RC kibble as well as both brands' pouches. Osiris hates kibble. We’ve tried a number of brands with Osiris as we did with Penny. With the exception of Hills & the 2 mentioned above, they were all pates (including some Kattovit tins) which both wouldn’t touch – they's never been a fan - & they won’t touch the Hills. At least we can return the Hills for a full refund although I might hang on a bit first as they would rather you tried more than one pouch before returning – so long as there is one pouch left & they are within date then they’ll refund the full price – not bad customer service. he can be a fussy eating, eating something then going off it so having options is always useful The good news is he's nicely hydrated & not losing weight - hopefully not famous last words!

Poor Osiris - I hope that his condition can be managed. It won't be easy for you with each cat on something different and I expect they each want what they can't have.

Poor lad, as lotsofcats says, I hope it can be managed. Is there any chance you could do a home made diet that he would eat like barley does for Alfie?

Oh no, I’m really sorry to hear this I hate kidney disease I hope you’re able to find something he likes and is able to eat. There are quite a few renal foods on Zooplus, other than the usual Hills & Royal Canin type brands x

Thanks on behalf of Osiris for his well wishes. cazypops, It may be worth looking at the home made diet for Osiris but not sure about what it should be - especially as cats at obligate carnivores - also difficult for the cattery I suspect. He is a fussy eater - unless is applaws (although can have his off days even on that) or human food - cooked chicken, cod, roast beef but not keen on lamb. like the Beaphar Thanks for the heads up on zooplus barley its where I'm getting the Kattovit pouches from. He didn't like the Kattovit tins, Integra & Beaphar trays that I got - they are all pates - I'd forgotten that as he doesn't like that style of food, he prefers gravy (or at a pinch jelly)

I guess a home made renal diet could be tricky with cats. Alfie’s diet is high in rice, fruit and veggies which would be no good for a cat. To be fair I imagine it’s tricky to manage to feed a CKD cat anything since obviously meat is high protein and that’s what needs to be restricted!
I don’t know if they do a cat version too but Royal Canin do a chunks in gravy renal dog food in a pouch. I have some of that just as a treat/something different for Alfie. He loves it! But he’s not a reliable taste tester. Lettuce is about the only thing he doesn’t love food wise.

barley the renal food he will tolerate (or at least did until he turned fussy again 2 days ago) is the RC pouches all 3 flavours chicken, tuna & beef along with the Kattovit same flavours which he currently will eat (eventually!) We changed him over gradually & he was happily eating the renal food but seems to have gone on a fussy streak - he still wants food so that's not the issue (as it can be for CKD as they can feel nauseous - as you will know) It might be interesting to see if there are feline nutritionists that could be consulted similar as I believe you did for Barley. Might have a word with the vets about his diet next week before he goes to the cattery so I can give them a definitive option if he gets fussy whilst in their care.

Osiris went to the vets today for another blood test to see how everything was going. Again he lulled them into a false sense of security as, apparently, he purred in his cage whilst awaiting the vet's arrival accepted cuddles whilst they trimmed his claws (I'd suggested that was done first in view of his behaviour last time). Then as soon as they tried to get the blood (not sure if it was the shave or the needle for the blood) he turned into a wild thing! The vet rang me to confirm that they could sedate Osiris as he was too angry to get the blood. I had authorised the sedation when he was signed in at the vets but nice of them the to double check. A little later the vet rang back to tell me the blood test results & really surprised me by saying it was good news his renal parameters are now in the normal range. He is o continue with the Ipakatine powder & as much renal food as he will eat, but as it is more important that Osiris eats then I'm to feed him something he will eat so something low in phosphorous & with moderate protein - a senior food is probably the more appropriate. This is what we've been doing since he went off the renal food. After Osiris had recovered from his strong sedation I called to say he could come home, he was definitely still woozy but was glad to have a little chicken for his first food since last night. As that stayed own Ok he had a mix of RC Renal Chicken with some more proper chicken for his tea & some cod from our fish & chips later. He has recovered so has been allowed out mid evening but will be kept in, as normal, overnight. This is really good news, kideny disease does not normally get better but then that was only a diagnosis based on his age so perhaps there was a something else causing his kidney results that is now better. Fingers Crossed. The vet wants to see him again in 6 months. So I now need to order some more RC Chicken & Beef pouches & find a home (probably the rescue - unless anyone here needs some renal food to try for their cat) for the Katovit (pouches & tins) Beaphar (pate style trays) Proplan (pouches) renal diets that he won't eat & return to Hills (via Fetch) their's that he won't eat. Feeling really relieved today.

So pleased 😊 about Osiris blood results , great news 😊 I had the same problem when Sindy was poorly at the end and the vet tried to take blood from her neck ☹️She went crazy so I had to leave her and they had to sedate her to do the bloods ☹️So traumatic for them . To be honest I couldn’t believe the size of the needle , no wonder they go crazy ,
Great news though 😊

Took Osiris back to the vets yesterday (11th) to see if they wanted to do blood tests again - its been the 6 months since the last one. When he'd had his dental last month the vet had said that as the last results were normal he didn't think it worth doing blood tests when he was anaesthetised for the dental. Anyway I starved him from 10:30 the night before just in case, but booked a consult with the head vet first. I wasn't surprised when he said not to do the bloods as Osiris body condition was good & that with CKD GAs are contra indicated. I remember how long it took for Penny to get it out of her system as her kidney disease progressed Also to really diagnose CKD the kidney needs to be 70% failure so its only a case of managing it. The vet was happy that by using the Ipakitine powder mixed in with the Applaws (I know its not a complete cat food) & then mixing it with a renal moist & Osiris eating that mix would be a good way of dealing with the problem - if there is one that is, although given his age it an increased percentage chance that he does. Of course Osiris wasn't happy about being kept in & wanted out - remember he doesn't like a litter tray - so when I told the vet & said I was surprised I hadn't had a damp carrier yet - he said "you've not got home yet - I suggest you drive with the car window open!!!" He does have a warped sense of human - although Osiris was a good boy going home as well - It's only a 5 minute drive from us to the surgery. Got Osiris' claws clipped while he was on the vet's table - he's a real softy on there just laid there while they were done, but looks can be deceiving as the 1st vet found out when taking bloods in the hospital part - hence the need for anaesthetics!!! So Osiris was glad to be home & have some breakfast instead of having bloods taken

Glad it all worked out fine for Osiris. Toffee doesn't like a litter tray either.
