So pleased with the good news chantel. We certainly worry so much when our furry friends are ill. A weight off your shoulders!

well we have eventually done it , Riley is booked in on the 19th June to be castrated ๐ฅ me and oh have discussed it a while back and I decided I wanted Riley to be castrated to prevent health issues later in his life. But we have just been putting it off. The vet also mentioned Riley may gain a little weight which would be good for him, he is a little under weight as he is a nightmare when it comes to meal times ,he is just so fussy, so hopefully it may give him a bit of appetite.
I will have to keep myself busy on that day. Although I know it's not quite as big op as having a bitch spayed.

Just a little update - the vet phoned me yesterday to let me know that there was nothing outstanding on Riley's urine sample that had been sent for culturing. So that was really good news . She just recommended that we get him castrated as planned and to just keep an eye on his urine.
So it is all booked for the 19th June and I have arranged a couple of days off work to spend with him.๐

Great news chantel. Glad that you will have a couple of days off work to look after Riley when he has his op - mind you, he will probably wonder what all the fussing is about.

Glad to see things are going o.k. chantel.Try not to worry,as a neighbours 14 yr old Rough Collie was castrated a few months ago due to a tumour and he is fine.Having the opp now will prevent the risk of Riley getting this and having to have an operation at a time in his life which must have more of a risk.

Well just when I think we have turned a corner โน๏ธRiley was not himself at all yesterday , he was spooked out in the early hours by thunder , as you all know he is a very anxious dog and it really knocked him off for the rest of the day. He was very tired with getting no sleep and had no interest in his tea last night.
When we got up this morning I noticed another wet patch on the carpet no bigger than a ten pence piece but since we stopped Riley's medication we have not noticed any more wet patches for about 2 weeks now and as you know his urine sample came back clear . It maybe a coincidence but riley was very anxious yesterday and I wondered if that could have something to do with the wet patch although i have not noticed any more wet patches today.
Hubby said yesterday that when he walked Riley he was constantly sniffing and licking , maybe their could be a bitch in season within the area but he wasn't bad today. I have not had a male dog before so I'm not sure if male dogs do a lot of sniffing and licking whilst out on walks .
It will be a good thing when Riley has had his op I am just hoping it will sort him out .

Thanx migsy I know it's not quite as bad having a male castrated to having a bitch spayed but it's still a worry when you have to leave them but I know it will be the best in the long run . Thank you

chantel Just a thought but has your vet tried a precautionary course of antibiotics for Riley? Alfie has had all sorts of urinary issues going on lately... blood in his urine as well as glucose and protein, pH has been too high too. He has had about three or four urinalysis and cultures over the past couple of months, all of which have been clear. He was diagnosed with kidney disease (backed up by blood tests) and on Friday he had his check-up and the kidney numbers had improved greatly. The vet took another urine 'dipstick' test and that was vastly different from last time too, my vet is thinking he may possibly have some kind of chronic rumbling kidney/urine infection going on too... she said it wasn't uncommon for cultures to come back clear even when there is actually an infection present. She sent more urine away for culturing on Friday to check again, but has started him on a course of antibiotics too anyway. Might be worth trying? I thought the cultures would be reliable but clearly not! Hope Riley is feeling less anxious today.

Thanks for your advice Barley and I am glad that Alfie is doing well, it's such a worry when our pets are unwell ๐
Riley was prescribed antibiotics when I took him to the vets the first time.she treated him at first for a urine infection due to lots of blood in his urine but said there was no sugar in his urine, he has since had another course of antibiotics and a course of inflammatory medication as she also thought it could be a prostate infection causing inflammation. He seemed to really pick up after taking the medication for inflammation all though not eating too much but that's nothing new for Riley he is such a fussy eater (a nightmare ) I have been wondering if it would be worth having some bloods done when he goes in for his castration and I might also take in another sample.
Just out of interest is Alfie castrated? I have only had females before so this is all new to me.๐

No Alfie isn't castrated. He had an ultrasound last year which showed a slightly enlarged prostrate and the vet thinks this may be causing some blood in his urine too. The plan was to neuter him when he was other everything (he had cataract surgery last year and then an eye removed) but now with the kidney disease we really don't want him to another another general anaesthetic so we are leaving things for now.

Arrrr poor little Alfie he sure has been through it bless him x he certainly is a little fighter x
Thank you for your advice, I have actually just spoken to the vets receptionist and expressed my concerns she said she would speak to the vet and phone me back after the surgery, she has phoned me back a short while ago and said that the vet thought it would be a good idea to do a few bloods before his op - to check his kidneys are functioning ok and if anything for my piece of mind. ๐
