We had him to the vets Monday and hes been put on metacam, he seems to have discomfort around the back area. The metacam has helped as he can now jump up onto the couch and bed again, but this morning he is not right again. He usually joins me on the bed when O.H leaves for work but he's not wanted to this morning. We were in the garden and he was stretching out his back leg alot, almost as if he has pain in his tummy ? He's done this in the past then eaten grass and thrown up. Where is gypsy when I need advice

Sorry to hear Beau hasn't recovered yet scallywag. I think I agree with lotsofcats about phoning the vets for advice. It may sound like a silly question but he hasn't had his vaccinations in the last week or so has he? One of Ajax's cat has recently reacted to her jab after about 10 days by having the aches, pains & inflamation associated with the virus the jab was protecting again (live vaccine). She's seen that before with other cats but only for a day or 2 but this time its gone on for at least a week although the cat does seem to have improved as a result of Metacam & another drug I can't remember (the standard treatments for the symptoms of the virus). Hope you can get to the root of the problem soon. Edit: Just seen jacksmum's post not a bad idea.

Hi has your dog had X Rays? to rule out a disc problem?xx Hi no not as yet, vet said it may well just be a pulled muscle and we are waiting to see how he is after the course of Metacam, he had a good feel around and explained ( funnily enough ) that if he were a .... can't remember breed he said, but he mentioned disc, but he said it was not usual for a Springer. He is jumping up on the bed again, but need to know if the Metacam is masking the pain. This afternoon he has perked back up again . Thanks for replies guys xx

Hope gypsy comes along to help you scallywag. Was it Dachshund vet mentioned scallywag, my grandpa used to say they were prone to disc issues. So sorry to hear Beau is not good. If he has been recently vaccinated could be worth questioning with vet as to if it could be an adverse reaction, though will not change current situation. My understanding is that stretching (front part of dog bowed down, bum in air) can be an indication of abdominal pain.

Sorry Beau hasn't been well scallywag. From experience, pain from the back end and often mistaken for spinal injuries can be abdominal pain especially gastric ulcers, infected anal glands, pulled muscles and even kidney infections. You described Beau stretching and this is one of the obvious symptoms that let me know my dog's inflammatory bowel disease is acting up. He will stretch his back legs out and do this strange spasm thing with his stomach. Are there any other signs to indicate it could be his stomach? With regards to slipped discs/disc protrusion etc, they can potentially occur with any dog but certain breeds are obviously more susceptible. What I would say is, when your dog has disc pain it is usually quite bad and they have trouble even walking! Some dogs are quite stoic but your vet would probably have picked up on this during his examination of Beau. Usually with disc problems you'd be looking at a referral vets and CT scans/MRI. The problem with Metacam and other NSAIDS is that they do mask pain and it can therefore make a diagnosis difficult, but at the same you don't want them in pain either. Also if he is suffering abdominal pain, Metacam could make this worse. How long did your vet advise you to give it for?

Hi gypsy he never gave an indication just said if he doesn't improve in 3 - 4 days to go back. Its only a small bottle 10ml size so guessing at 20kg dose per day it wont last long ? He has been ok most of the day, seems to be in the mornings hes very mopey. Hes not stretched out his leg any more today, and as I said he has done this in the past. Oh and the end of his Pee Pee he is getting orange staining at the moment but too that to be normal ?

Orange urine isn't normal scallywag . Dogs can release a protein into their urine following injury/stress to a muscle but there are many other reasons for orange urine too, so best to check it out. I would collect a sample and make another appointment with your vet.

scallywag you mentioned Beau seems worse on a morning....if it is abdominal pain it could be due to stomach acid/reflux which tends to be an issue when a dog hasn't eaten for several hours. I can only suggest things...hope he improves.
