Had to rush Alfie into the vets at 8.30 this morning as he was really worrying me!
The first thing I do when I get up in the morning is feed him, as soon as he'd finished he was behaving really strangely. He was really restless and wouldn't settle anywhere, and when he did lay down he kept doing funny poses or sitting really straight and upright (like a Sphinx as the vet put it) with his neck stuck out. He was walking around ok but occasionally he'd randomly stick his back leg out at a bizarre angle. He really started to worry me when I was brushing my teeth and he was trying to jump in the bath and the sink (obviously he's too small to jump in the sink but he kept scrabbling at the edge) - I offered him some water in case that was the problem but he wasn't interested, and even lifted him into the bath to see what he wanted in there but he just stood there.
He was really clingy and kept following me around, even in the same room if I moved a few steps he would hurry over and practically stand on my feet, and if I sat down he would immediately try and climb on my lap. Also really unusual for him as he isn't a clingy kind of dog in the slightest. I felt his stomach and he did feel a bit bloated and firm so then I was really worried.
I had a paid walk to do (any time before 10am) this morning so I really wasn't sure what to do, I would have left him at home but my parents have gone away for the weekend and I don't trust my brother to keep an eye on him - so I decided to call the vet and after being put on hold for a bit they told me to take him straight to their main hospital in Epping.
The vet checked him over and said that his heart rate and temperature were normal, but that he was obviously uncomfortable when she felt his stomach - though he didn't present the serious symptoms of bloat. She gave me the option to keep him in for blood tests and observation (she mentioned pancreatitis as it's common in Cockers). Alternatively she could give him an anti sickness jab and some tablets and I could keep an eye on him at home, but did mention that if I needed to bring him back at all this weekend then I would be charged the out of hours rate. I decided to take him home as I was feeling better now he'd been checked over and seemed to be ok.
I asked about feeding and walking him and she said to give him a bland diet for a few days and that he should just have gentle short walks - naughty me decided to bend the rules a bit there as obviously I had the paid walk to do and I still didn't want to leave him at home, so he went for an hour walk with Archie but it was very gentle and we just pottered about down the river and went at their pace (Archie takes forever to sniff everything anyway!).
He seemed absolutely fine on his walk and he's been fine since we got home again, he's settled down to sleep since we got back so either the anti sickness jab did it's job, or whatever was wrong fixed itself.
I'll be keeping a close eye on him over the weekend, especially after his meals. Fingers crossed it was just a one off!
