Yesterday, I had to have my beloved cat Sam put to sleep. She was 20 years and 1 month old. Originally my Mum's cat, I inherited Sam 3 years ago, when she was in perfect health. But after about 15 months, her weight began to fall steadily, and she was diagnosed with kidney disease and arthritis in her back legs. Then in March, she developed cognitive dysfunction (senility), in the form of howling for no apparent reason and poohing outside the litter tray. The arthritis had also spread to her front paws, so her quality of life was quite low. Despite all of her problems, she has always been a very nice natured and affectionate cat, and this made it very difficult to take the decision to have her put to sleep. The house seems very empty without Sam, and even after just one day without her, I miss her desperately. Chris. (The photo below is from 3 years ago, she was quite a bit thinner at the end.)

Oh I'm so sorry to hear the news of Sam @cs2015. she looks a lovely cat & would have been a great connection to your mum, so a double whammy. At 20 years old Sam had a really good life & even though she'd only been with you for 3 years no wonder you miss her, they really do leave pawprints on our hearts Having lost our nearly 17 year old cat Penny to kidney disease in March (she also had arthritis) I can really sympahise with you as it is a really horrible disease, so many ups & downs you never know when its time to decide enough is enough, but when their quality of life is degraded like Sam's was, we can only choose to make that last act of love than we can give them. She will always be with you in your heart & memories. Take care. RIP Sam young & well again at Rainbow Bridge, playing with friends old & new, especially her sister Molly..

Thanks for your kind words. Her kidneys had actually been quite stable due to the K/D diet, and the arthritis manageable. But the biggest problem was the senility, which the vet thinks was due to some sort of brain seizure or stroke back in March, after which she was never the same again. All three problems seemed to compound each other. I keep looking at the spots in the house where she often used to sit, expecting to see her, but she's gone. It is so devastating.

So sorry to hear about Sam @cs2105, she was a lovely cat. What an incredible age to get to! You have done the right thing for her and I hope that you have many fond memories of her. I like to think that our pets stay with us in spirit and I often say hello to my previous pets. I hope that when the time is right you will feel strong enough to get another cat as you obviously have a very caring nature. When I lost a cat suddenly years ago we were devastated and like you we kept looking at where the cat used to sit and we kept going out as it was awful in the house without a cat, it was so empty. Keep posting on here and hopefully it will help you to discuss with others who know how you feel.
RIP Sam x

I keep looking at the spots in the house where she often used to sit, expecting to see her, but she's gone. It is so devastating. I know just what you mean @cs2015, there is so much of Penny still around the house (our cats shared a lot of things) & occasionally I look around & see Penny only to realise that its one of the others. Also the neighbour's cats aren't chased out the garden so much - it was hers even if she didnt use it so much the last few monthsr (winter cold & wet). We've actually got brilliant sunshine today & she would have enjoyed lazing in its warmth However it is getting easier to enjoy the happy memories of her life without the sadness of her being physically missing and hopefully it will be for you too. I'm glad that the K/D controlled the kidney problem for Sam.

Many thanks for the comments.
Although I only had Sam for 3 years, I saw her growing up at my Mum's place right from being an 8 week old kitten, so it makes it very hard to deal with. I miss her desperately.
I would definitely like to get another cat, but really don't when the best time would be.

So sorry for your loss @cs2015 it's undoubtedly the hardest decision we have to make for our beloved pet, but in the end also the kindest. Like scallywag says you'll know when your ready to give another puss a loving home. Weather that's tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. {{HUGS}}

20 years!! you should be so proud and happy of your life together, i am so sorry for your loss and hope you find peace soon. Something my husband and I found comfort in was knowing and understanding the life we all had together could not have gotten better. quality of life is so important. for reference, we found guidance in this blog that really hit home at the right time www.petdoors.com/blog/dealing-with-grief/

Arrrr I so very sorry for your loss of Sam . We all know exactly how you will be feeling at this moment in time. The pain when we lose one of our beloved pets is unbearable βΉοΈ Sam was a gorgeous cat and and lived to be a grand old age , you must have really spoilt him. He will always be in your heart x
I have my late cat's identity tag which I carry on my key ring . And I have also planted a bush in her favourite place at the bottom of my garden , and every morning I take just a few minutes to look at it I just feel like she is still there in her favourite place.
You will know when the time is right to welcome a new furbaby into your heart.x
R.i.p Sam Gone but never forgotten xx
