My Molly had to be PTS on the 23rd March, she was diagnosed with CKD on the 11th Feb, she was only 9 when she died 3 weeks away from her 10th birthday she was my only cat. I writing this make people aware of Metacam, Molly was prescribed Metacam at the age of 3 after she had some teeth removed and she remained on a daily dose for every day until she was diagnosed with CKD.
Molly has been poorly on & off since last summer the worst was when she had severe diarrhoea with blood, her vet treated her for a possible parasite that never existed we know this because after the 3rd week of Molly being poorly we were asked to collect a sample of her faeces which was sent off for analysis, no parasite, right from the very first we asked the vet if Molly could come off of the Metacam as indicated on the box, her vet insisted she stayed on it in hindsight I wish I had ignored her. The focus at that time then shifted to her food, we went to great lengths source sensitive tummy foods that we thought she would like, her belly did improve slightly but was never right. She also developed a strange habit of frequently urinating on the grass, ALL this information was relayed to her vet, in fact Molly attended the vets 11 times in 8 months, never once did her vet consider her kidneys were struggling, and her Metacam needed to be stopped.
After Molly died I've obviously tried to make sense of how such a young cat can die from this disease I know there could be many causes for kidney failure but in Molly's case Metacam couldn't of helped her poorly kidneys, all of the symptoms last summer indicate Kidney disease, not once did Molly have her blood and urine screened.
Ive since found out that its recommended cats on long term Metacam should have regular blood and urine screening carried to check the health of their kidneys this is only a recommendation and not law maybe it should be, Molly never had this until 11th Feb this year, she was on Metacam for 6 years.
I'm not starting a crusade against Metacam undoubtedly it can have its uses, but please please if your cat is on Metacam make sure they are getting the proper screening and grill your vet about everything.
The dangers of Metacam was never explained, alternatives were never explored, Molly was never offered proper monitoring of her kidneys and liver.
I'm having to live with this terrible guilt Molly was my best friend and baby all in one fur bundle, I failed her terribly I miss her so much I can't eat or sleep and today instead of having my Sunday Molly cuddle I'm getting a garden memorial for her. Don't have regrets like me.
After speaking to a veterinary nurse Friday I'm putting in an official complaint to Molly's vets and RCVS not sure how far I will get as technically they have not broken any laws but have failed in a duty of care.
Sorry bit like war and peace but please be aware and look after your furbabies x
