I'm sure she had a Happy Birthday at Rainbow Bridge knowing that we were thinking of her on what would have been her special day. Don't know if she had anything to do with it but there was a rainbow in the sky late afternoon, she always did make sure we knew she was around Thanks everyone, your thoughts & words are much appreciated

Her way of letting you know she made it safely over the bridge maybe?

What a bargain - Penny must have been overseeing things! We had (amongst other tree pruning etc.) a hawthorn tree removed & the stump ground down a couple of weeks ago. Sadly despite extra special care, although aparrently healthy it hadn't flowered for at least 4 years. It was also getting rather straggly & shading a number of other plants which were now growing forward rather than up. Sad to see it go, it had been there since before we moved in in 2000. Perhaps it missed the eucalyptus tree that had been next to it but had to come down in 2008 Anyway this created a largish space in the garden & has given us an opportunity to plant Penny's memorial standard repeat flowering lilac (along with her ashes) & to move the Penny Lane rose we got in her memory. We had got planter/climber support for the rose but it wasn't really deep enough for the roots. Looking around the garden centres I saw an arch which looked about right for the space & would be good for the climber & could frame her lilac. It was made up in the centre but not priced & no others boxed up. Unfortunately they couldn't tell me the price as it was late in the day & they needed to speak to the right person. As a result I went home measured the space (allowing for another shrub to be moved slightly into it to stop overcrowding something else) & went back to the centre on Sunday. The first person I spoke to contacted someone else & said it would be the same as similar (but not identical) ones boxed up at £74.99. We measured the one I wanted & it would fit the space perfectly & then I realised that it actually was a bit smaller, not just in height (which I could see as they were made up as well) but also in width. So qeuried the price. The man double checked & the right person came to double check on the actual arch, went away & came back with a big smile on her face. It was £44.99! Then her grin got bigger - she said it was on code C4 -whatever that meant - & had been reduced to £13.49! That was before the 15% discount that was on over the week-end so ended up at £11.47. I was stunned - no way I was not having it! She went & got a screwdriver & partially dismantled it to fit in my car & Mark helped put it up when I got home & put it roughly in place. All we've no got to do is prune back the neighbour's climber that had got tangled in the hawthorn & is now dangling over our side of the fence. Prune a hebe back into shape on one side of the gap & prune a Philadelphus before moving it a foot or two into the gap. Once done we can finalise the arch's placement & finally put Penny to rest. I can almost see her smirking at the luck or perhaps she approved & was influencing things!

Wow, what a bargain. A fitting tribute to the lovely Penny. I'm sure she had something to do with it - sounds like a lovely spot for Penny to be laid to rest and for you and Mark to sit and fondly remember her.

thanks scallywag you're right there was a smile but also a tear at the thought of it being final, but for us that is the way we want it, although it will not for a few weeks at least. lotsofcats, there's no seat there but the summer house (mind you we don't often get to sit in there - the 2 chairs are normally occupied by felines when its open! ) faces that part of the garden as does the conservatory. Just the other side of the hebe is the buddleia which was planted over Chloe's ashes. So that will also attract butterflies & moths for Penny to chase as well as those on her lilac (although Lexie may pinch a few! . Chloe was a great scratcher of the thick old stems of buddleias hence the choice.

Can't believe it's one year ago today that we booked an appointment with the vet for the late afternoon, knowing that we might come back without her which was sadly the case. We miss her & still sometimes see something out the corner of our eyes that almost makes us think its her. She came into our home, along with Osiris, on 20/3/2008 at nearly 9 years old. This photo was taken 2 days after she arrived:- 20080322 In conservatory_85 by osiriscat, on Flickr she gave us another 8 years of her life before she left on 29/3/2016 just 29 days from her 17th birthday Farewell Penny girl 2016_03_29 P1040240 by osiriscat, on Flickr Despite all her ills & shrinking/weight loss, shown by the fact that in that last picture she is wearing a kitten collar, she never lost her glossy black coat & even with her grumpiness & deft use of claws & gums (she'd lost most of her teeth before we got her!) she loved her cuddles We've still got to finish her memorial the lilac (in a temporary pot) has survived the winter & is showing new greenery. So, now we know its Ok, given some good weather (?!) & the ground it is to go in dries up a bit more (we have a layer of clay about a spade depths down) we will put her ashes in their permanent position with the lilac over in the middle of the arch. The Penny Lane rose is doing nicely on one side of the arch & the evergreen clematis is twining its way on the other side. The clematis is winter flowering but although it is growing nicely we've not had any flowers this year. We lost the original clematis I got before we put in the arch & I can't remember if that was Jingle Bells or Freckles - its between those 2 as to the one that is planted or lost!!! When it eventually flowers we'll find out Missing you Penny girl, thank you for being such a characterful cat Enjoy Rainbow Bridge & we'll all see you there some day

We finally got round to laying Penny (to be precise her ashes) to rest on 14/5/2017. She now has a dwarf, repeat flowering Lilac (Bloomberg Pink Perfume) over her & the arch over that has an evergreen clematis (either Freckles or Jingle Bells (lost one but not sure which!) on one side & the climbing rose Penny Lane on the other. Penny's resting place 20170516 P1040995 by osiriscat, on Flickr We'd got quite a space due to having removed a hawthorn tree so have planted some other plants, against the fence is a Heavenly Bamboo (Nadina Domestica) & also some aqualegias that had self-seeded elsewhere, a dwarf mauve rhodedendron (we already had & needed planting), a lavender (stoechas Anouk), dwarf hebe (Pearl of Paradise), gaultheria (2 red (Bells Seedling) & 1 white (Snow White) - male & female) & some heucheras (Lime Marmalade & Marmalade). Sadly I don't think the white gaultheria has survived being kept in a pot until we'd got the right weather to plant with both of at home at a weekend - if it doesn't recover we'll replace it next year. I'm going to put some catnip in one of the owl planters & some cat grass in the other & possibly some small seasonal plants/bulbs. Penny's resting place 20170522 P1040998 by osiriscat, on Flickr I think Penny would approve as the area gets the early sun & then again around 12 to 4/5 pm in summer & the flowers, along with the nearby buddleias, will bring plenty of moths/butterflies which she would have loved to chase & catch We can see her everyday from the kitchen window. We'd originally also got a patio planter to hold the rose, which was too small, so we planted a variegated red alstromeria (Rock 'n' Roll) & a couple of dwarf/patio clematis (Filigree & Bijou) in that. There are now buds on the alstromeria & the clematis are flowering well. Penny's planter 20170604 P1050031 by osiriscat, on Flickr

Penny's resting place will be so beautiful when the plants get well established, it's a lovely spot for her. a lovely alstroemeria, it's beautiful even without the flowers. I bought some pink and purple ones, I love them because they flower for so long. Lovely clematis too.
