I've mentioned this issue on here a couple of times before but sadly we are still having the problem despite me trying to avoid it!
Sorry, this is going to be a bit long winded but want to explain fully.
There is a man that lives in my area with a large German Shepherd cross called Buddy - poor Buddy's owner is a complete idiot and has the most appalling attitude - and he absolutely never has him on a lead.
I've had run ins with him numerous times now - Buddy has never caused Alfie (or any other dog that I know of) any actual injuries but I still find him to be a problem. With most dogs there isn't much of an issue but he is very imposing and obviously tries to dominate them - most of the owners don't notice but you can see that their dogs are not comfortable around him and would prefer to get away.
When I am walking with my friend Roy and his dog Carla it is a nightmare as Carla is reactive to certain dogs and hates Buddy. Roy always puts Carla on a lead and we try to keep away from Buddy but as he is always off lead he will chase after us and rushes up to Carla barking and growling before running off again. If we haven't noticed him in time and Carla is off-lead then they will fight.
On one occasion we were approaching a zebra crossing near a school at about 8.45am (all the kids were walking to school) and Buddy suddenly appeared on the crossing, spotted Carla and was going mental running around in the road trying to get to her - luckily for us there was a barrier between them - but all this was going on with loads of cars and kids around, he nearly got run over and all the kids started screaming. The owner just carried on without a care in the world!
Another time (I wasn't there) Roy was telling me that he was on his way to our local park when he spotted Buddy coming out of the park just ahead of him and hung back. While he was waiting Buddy was running around in the road, nearly got run over twice and was terrorising a woman with a poodle. The owner finally appeared and just carried on walking even though his dog was still running around in the road.
Buddy has never full on attacked Alfie but will come over to him and then suddenly start barking and growling right in his face.
After the first time, the next time I saw him I asked the owner to put him on the lead - which he did. But then as we were passing Buddy pulled him over and he dropped the lead and we still had the same issue. His owner definitely knows that I have an issue with him as we've had words before and I've told him to keep Buddy away from my dogs (I've seen him a few times when I'm walking other dogs too) but he doesn't care.
He won't put him on the lead anymore so if I see them at all I will just go in the opposite direction and avoid him completely.
However yesterday this wasn't an option as they suddenly appeared in front of us when I was walking with my friend and her Springer, we were on a narrow track and there was nowhere else to go so I was forced to walk past. I had Alfie on a very short lead and put myself between them. Buddy was ok with my friend's dog, although you could see he was nervous. Then he spotted Alfie and rushed up to him barking and growling as usual so I shouted out 'HEY!' and scared him off, it worked and he kept away - then the owner gave me a smirk and said to me 'it's alright, don't get excited'. I was fuming! I managed to bite my tongue and stop myself going off on a swearing rampage and just glared at him instead, then moaned to my friend about him after lol.
It's his attitude that really gets to me as he obviously knows about Buddy's behaviour but as he's never done any real damage he seems to think it's acceptable. He just seems to think everyone else is overreacting - he definitely thinks I'm a bit of an idiot (which was obvious after his comment yesterday) because I'll refuse to walk past him and if Buddy ever comes near me then I shout at him.
Another friend told me that someone had an encounter with him before and had a go at him, he just stuck his fingers up at her and walked off - she was a little old lady! Buddy's owner is retired so you'd think he'd have a bit more respect for people, obviously not.
Help! How do I deal with this?
