Has anyone tried adding mashed canned pumpkin to their cat's diet, as an aid to minimising constipation ? My cat Sam (who has kidney disease) suffers from mild constipation at times, so I am interested in trying this, rather than the Katalax medication she has been prescribed.
Does it need to be cooked, or is it OK to use as it comes out of the can ?

One of my cats, Kiba-Khan, has suffered with constipation since he was a kitten but I have it under control now. I give him a teaspoonful of lactulose in the morning and evening on his food and also 1 Peridale capsule in the evening. Now and then I buy Applaws chicken and pumpkin cat food (this is expensive to add to his diet. I haven't bought any tinned pumpkin because you have to be careful, if it's for a pie filling it will have sugar in it (read the contents). You can buy a fresh pumpkin and scoop out the inside and put it in a blender to make a puree and give the cat a spoonful or two now and then. I think it would be easier for you to buy the Applaws chicken and pumpkin food for occasional use or buy some Lactulose and give a spoonful now and then if you feel that Sam is constipated. Also, cut down on dried kibble as this doesn't help.

@cs2015 luckily my Penny who also has kidney disease hasn't needed any such help (so far). However I found a lot of useful information on this site www.felinecrf.org/ It can be a bit overwhelming but I use it to look for what I'm interested in at any one time. I did a quick search of it for pumpkin & found this article on constipation www.felinecrf.org/constipation.htmThere is also a linked support group groups.io/g/tanyackd which you have to apply to join. There are some very experienced members on it - a lot from the States but also the UK & other countries. I rarely post on the group but I have learnt a lot from the questions & answers on it. Hope the pumpkin helps Sam.

A few years ago after a diet change two of my cats suffered terrible constipation and I used the katalax, which didn't have much effect to be honest, but I bought a few tins of the Applaws Chicken and Pumpkin and it worked a treat.

I would agree about the Applaws when required, although if you were wanting to add pumpkin on a regular basis then creating your own puree would be better as you can add it to any food that you already feed Sam especially if you are feeding renal diet foods.

Thanks for the info. I did try giving Sam the Applaws chicken and pumpkin, but she didn't like it, other than just licking the juice. The Katalax does work, but I am a bit uneasy about the long term effects of paraffin. I also tried Lactulose which also worked, although Sam exhibited signs of nausea. Having said that, the last of her back teeth were in a bad way, and that could have been making her feel ill. She has just had dental work to remove the dodgy teeth and clean the rest, so I may try the Lactulose again. Sam is now 19 yrs and 7 months old ! s1028.photobucket.com/user/cs2015/media/Sam/Sam_zpszyvp0zo5.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

What an amazing age! the photo of Sam is lovely and she certainly doesn't look her age. I hope that the Lactulose works for her; let us know how she gets on with it this time round.

@cs2015, we have the chicken & pumpkin but I must admit its not a big favourite but OK with a couple of our & not at all with the other 2.
I'm not sure if there is a difference in usage of pumpkin to the lactulose/Katalax as I suspect you could add pumpkin on a regular basis to food to prevent the constipation whilst I believe the other 2 are more for when it happens. However I'm not sure about this so there may be others who could advise.
Sam looks really good for her age. I remember you posting a link to her album when you first joined. How's her arthritis, did she have the K-laser treatment?

In photobucket, I have the following items under 'Share this album' in a list on the right-hand side: Email & IM HTML embed Flash embed Slideshow Story Story embed I have no idea which one to use or how.

How's her arthritis, did she have the K-laser treatment? OK thanks. The tin I have is Libbys 100% Pure Pumpkin. Can it be used straight from the can, or does it need to be cooked first ? Yes, Sam had the K-Laser treatment - 6 sessions initially over 2 weeks, then one every month or so. It does seem to be beneficial, and she can move her back legs more freely. She still has difficulty with sideways movement in her back legs due to an injury when she was younger, but running is now a lot faster. She can now chase other cats out of the garden ! The kidney disease seems to have stabilised as each blood test since going on the K/D dried food (10 months now) has been unchanged or slightly improved. RBC also improved to the extent that she is no longer anaemic at all. Her weight varies between 3.8 and 4kg, but I think a lot of that was due to her teeth problems.

Oh different to me then LOL but I just went and looked again if you actually hover over the pic you should get 3 bars show on the to[ left, hover over them and some links flash up below them, the left of the actual photo. Select share then you get the list with the IMG URL title come up on the list on the right that's how I copied your pic into this thread hope this makes senses ?

Hi @cs2015, think I might be able to solve this for you. In Photobucket (PB) you can choose which links are shown you may well not have the IMG link enabled currently. At the top of the PB screen is the menu bar which starts with a picture of a camera & finishes with the cart box. Immediately to the left of the cart box is a circle which is your profile picture (if you have one or just a generic head otherwise). Hover your cursor over this & you will see a drop down menu Profile Settings Log Out storage used Click on Settings On the screen that is then presented click on the Albums tab On the next screen you'll see a lot of options with tick boxes alongside. Scroll down to the section is headed LinksBelow this heading make sure that the IMG Code one is ticked Then scroll down to the bottom of the page & click on Save. When you go back to your photo you should now see IMG Code as an option Hope that helps, if you don't understand don't hesitate to ask, I'm renowned for confusing people I do have a PB account but use it rarely preferring Flickr ( scallywag is a PB regular PB user). As I a result I'm not so familiar with PB so I've had to look for ways to do things in the past. Those who use it regularly will have set this up a long time ago & can forget that its not the default

In that case @cs2015, there's no excuse for a lack of photos of a lovely cat Glad it worked.
