My dogs must be intelligent then as I do not have to tell them to come in, they move from the sun into the shade when too hot and then rotate..too cold back out in the sun...the only thing I have to remember to do is put suncream on their pink bits LOL

Do you guys think it would affect Jess more then? As she's black, has quite thick fur and is about the size of a small border collie? She always has a bowl of fresh water in the garden as it's getting very hot but does love to sunbathe and run around with her ball. I've called her in a few times today and waited until she's had a nice drink to let her out again but is there more chance? Sorry not meaning to hijack this thread but I was just wondering as I do not wish to see an overheated Jess

Everyone sayd black dogs could be more affected, CurlyCub. I would do as Rubyroo does; apply dog sun cream on the appropraite parts, and speak to a vet just to get expert advice

CurlyCub I'd just watch her and if she starts panting bring her inside to cool down. And not walk her in the hottest parts of the day. Amber gets hot easily too, but she chooses the shade so it's never a problem really. She likes frozen melon cubes - maybe Jess would too? The other thing our dogs like is when we fill up the paddling pool for them, they have a good splash around in it! I wouldn't be too worried about getting a vets opinion personally - I don't see what they would tell you differently.

Me and the dogs had a lovely day out in the sun today. Our two definitely like to be outdoors in the air. our morning walk was lovely, really chilled out. Then we spent pretty much all day out in the garden, dogs in and out of the shady spots and me sat on my chair luxury! Our two go in and out of the sun/shade/inside and as they have white fur (apart from their heads, one black, one brown)they can easily cope with a nice bit of medium warmth. They also have a good covering of fur on their bellies. Any warmer than it was today though (it was only about 20 degrees, hopefully a nice trial run for the summer) and I'd definitely have my eye on them a bit more, just to make sure they don't over do it. todays temperature was easily handled by all of us and it was glorious Hopefully we will have some nice (proper hot) weather to come as the summer starts. At which point I'll also be keeping an eye on pavement temperatures and adjust walk times accordingly, although we tend to go out fairly early morning and early evening so its never to much of an issue to be honest. cooler tomorrow.....gutted!

Julie, glad to hear you're all coping well Today was a bit warm for jasper. Nice for me although I did start to feel burning on my neck, I didn't have sun cream on though so we stayed in the shade. Fortunately we have an east facing garden so one is usually shaded when the other is a sun trap lol Also good point about pavements, I've seen some nasty pictures of pad burns recently

Yeah the pavements can get so red hot and its easy to forget unless you've wandered out into the garden barefoot. Really dodgy. Still its a nice problem to have, cos it means its summer, if you know what I mean. Jasper will be better tomorrow

Oh definitely. It'd be like us walking onto a scalding hot beach with no shoes (now wouldn't that be a nice thought!) I tend to walk jasper first thing in the morning and then if he's not sparked out, again in the evening. It doesn't seen quite as hot today and we're expecting rain Just hope I get to work before it starts!

candy is black and HATES THE HEAT... I carnt take her out in heat of day.... I always have the paddling pool out ready for her to pop into.... she sits in front of fan indoors... bless her..... .... but I keep eye on her but so far she seems to keep out of sun on her own I don't need to tell her to come in the shade....

Earl doesn't seem like a paddling pool dog from last experience. My grandma unexpectedly grabbed Earl and put him in it, seeing if he would swim by holding him just off the bottom! He was confuzzled! Its colder today here... shame when the weather seems to JUST get better

Thank you for the advice Jess loves ice cubes, but has never had flavoured ones - I am hoping to make her some at some point How do you go about making melon flavoured ones? Also thank you BorderTerrier for the advice

Hiya CurlyCub I just chop up melon into bite sized cubes and pop them in the freezer. Or I mash up some fruit (like banana, raspberries and blueberries) and put it in a cup with a dentastix or carrot stick through the middle. Amber also likes frozen pork ribs & chicken legs too......although I don't know if you'd want to give them to Jess...but anyhow... Or you could make ice cubes with a tiny bit of peanut butter..... And then see what Jess likes best
