Hello , My cat recently got in to a cat fight (we think ) he has a cut near the back of his tail , also got bitten on his front leg last year by we think another cat ... I'm just wondering if there is any way I can prevent him fighting ? we moved house nearly a year and a half ago , and seems lots of cats in the area ... I always keep him in during tt day when I'm at work, and he usually gos out around 5pm - 10pm each day , then I get him in for the night ! I'm so worried he's gonna keep getting hurt Thanks

Unfortunately that's the trouble with tom cats, they will fight with other toms, usually over territory. The only thing you can do is always check him for any injuries and look out for abscesses which can form very quickly from a scratch or bite and will need to be treated by the vet with antibiotics. I only have one outdoor cat and that's Toffee (my avatar)and he has been fighting recently and has scratches on his ear and side. I put antiseptic pet ointment on them and luckily they have dried up well. Toffee is not a good fighter and usually ends up losing his collar.
Read the thread by tonib about her cat Osiris who is in the wars from fighting. It's the one with the heading 'I'm booking a permanent seat...'

Unfortunately that's the nature of the beast. As lotsofcats says just keep an eye on him for any injuries. It wouldn't be fair to keep him in altogether. My tom is a fighter too, but over the last 5 years that we have lived here we've only needed to take him to the vets three times.

I wish I could find an answer nixy03 to the question of cat fights. Although we do have a number of outdoor cats, predominately male, in the area & although the males do have stand-offs they seem to have settled on their hierarchy/territory, even I suspect time-sharing the area. However I there does seem to be more trouble at this time of year & we've also seen the odd new cat in the area - one we saw last year so may well be a seasonal visitor & I think unneutered so probably a stray looking for a female. As the others have said just keep an eye on your cat for any injuries - I missed Roman's which is why its worse than Osiris's. We've had more vet visits than the others as Roman seems very prone to abscesses but this is the first for Osiris but then he usually backs away and doesn't go as far away as Roman does.

Hi yes I wish there was an answer too ...! He never used to get in fights before we moved , or just didn't get hurt lol? I always keep him in after 10pm and he doesn't seem to mind , but still manages to fight haha Hope it's not lots of vet visits now though ...... One of my previous cats (a neutered male) was always fighting - other male cats (he'd try to kill them), dogs and foxes mostly. I knew him to try and chase the bin lorry down the road challenging it to a fight and calling it a coward (in cat-language) for moving away from him. Unfortunately that's what male cats are like, they try to defend their territory so they have access to as many females as possible. He adored people though - if you saw him interacting with a person you wouldn't think he had it in him to fight. Butter wouldn't melt.
