... by Penny for not giving her any food today. Starving 2015_04_24 P1030562 by osiriscat, on Flickr For a few weeks Penny's hasn't been eating as much as she used to. She's not skinny but I was beginning to be concerned that her waist was looking a little too defined when looking down on her back. So I arranged to take her to the vets this morning for a check over, weight check & nail clip. When she was weighed in at 3.2Kg I realised that she had lost 0.5Kg since her vacs in early January. She's also been vomiting more frequently, she's always had furballs but she has been having more a week (although only once a day) recently & sometimes its just vomit no hair. Of course she is 16 on Sunday so is a good age but she's also been on Metacam since October 2010. The vet was suggesting giving her some tablets to improve her appetite & see how that went & if that didn't improve things then go for blood tests. When I mentioned how long she'd been on Metacam, he was surprised (he's fairly new at the surgery) & agreed that having the blood tests now could be a good idea. So the decision was taken to leave her at the hospital to be sedated (no way was she going to tolerate them taking bloods without!) & bloods to be taken & her nails clipped. they rang back around midday to say that it wasn't bad news. There were a few electrolytes very slightly higher than they should be which showed there could be some slight renal problems. Her lack of appetite & vomiting could be down to excess gastric acid. So no food for Penny today & then a bland diet along with meds (luckily crushable) of Periactin (to help her appetite) & Zitac (to help the vomiting) & to go back in 7 days. Oh & to stop the Nutraquin+ as she wasn't eating the food with it in. She came home after her small dose of Ketamine (to sedate her) rather wobbly & went straight (well as best as she could!) to her feeding mat looking very expectingly! When I did the other cats & our teas she was waiting for hers - how do you tell her that its the vets advice? Hopefully she'll enjoy the chicken & rice she'll be getting over the next few days & we'll have fish & chips for tea tomorrow & she'll have fish instead of chicken then. Better be careful to give her a little & often in the morning aas she'll be starving.

My vet wanted me to put Beau back on the Loxicom until we could get back in to see him, needless to say I didnt ( even thou his bloods came up ok ) im going to restrict Beau time wise at weekends running around outside with O.H rather than go down that road if I can. Xx scallywag, Lost me on "the post answering your last PM!" - My turn to be lost this time To be honest I don't think this is necessarily down to the Loxicom but probably age but the side effects of it made me go for the blood test sooner rather than later. But I understand your concerns & if you can take a different route then it makes sense to give it a try. Glad to hear his bloods came up fine. Penny's still not impressed, no kibble, too much rice - she's routed out most of the bits of chicken. Doesn't like the powdered tablets in some gravy from one of the other cats' breakfast. Broke the bland diet to try wrapping it in a little ham - still no joy. Interesting question - how do you give a cat a tablet to increase her appetite when you can't get her to eat it in the first place. Even the vet said crush it up in her food as he doubted I'd manage to give it to her. Looking at her shaved neck I think the sedative still didn't make her the easiest patient! shaved (chicken?) neck 2015_04_25 P1030566 by osiriscat, on Flickr we've been finding pieces of white fur falling of her & around the house as her neck dried yesterday/today - probably wet due to a combination of antiseptic skin cleaner & cleaning any dripped blood! Oh well maybe time to get the armour on - long sleeves for us & a towel round her to drop them into her mouth.

Oh poor Penny, you cruel mummy you. Shame she doesn't understand that sometimes you need to be cruel to be kind. As for the tablet tonib, have you thought of the way that my vet suggested, crushing it and mixing in butter and then putting it on her paws to lick off? it worked for us with Flirts, and a lot less traumatic than the armour, for both us and him.

That's worth a try cazypops although not sure how that fits in with a bland diet which is my problem. Normally I crush Dreamies to give her the Metacam & wrap the mix in some small pieces of ham or use liver paste. Managed to get the 1/4 tablet into her tonight - more by luck than judgement - she was squirming & lashing out but vocal with it & I managed to drop it into her open mouth - must have got the aim right as I can't find it. Mind you have several scratches to prove she's still alive & kicking! Oh & I don't think the vets trimmed her claws when she was sedated! Wish they had! scallywag sending you a PM.

Agree with you about dogs being much easier @gillykat! Spot on with the best way is tipping the head back - works wonders with Roman, he's a real gentleman. The few times he tries too avoid it he only moves his head never paws or teeth. Penny is a different matter. We've had to do it before so know the pitfalls but not how to avoid them. the best way has been with Mark holding her & me opening the mouth & dropping it in, or else find her in a suitable position & when she's not expecting it grab & tilt the head back. If they can be crushed we can usually find some way to put them in something she likes. I succumbed to giving her powdered tablets mixed with liver paste wrapped in wafer thin ham this morning, seemed to work when she had a couple of cat treats to encourage her. This evening the crushed tabler was wrapped in wafer thin chicken with her metacam. Again she got it down her but sadly ten minutes or so later she sicked it up. The good news was that was all she brought up. The fish she'd had an few hours earlier did not. The weight loss was thought to perhaps be due to getting older initially but as she takes Metacam I wanted her bloods checked & these showed a slight decrease in kidney function but again not unusual at her age. The problem also is that she was being a bit more frequent in her hairballs/sick & wasn't eating as much as normal, although otherwise ok. Today was the first vomit since the travel to the vets mind you she didn't have food on Friday. Just seen Penny's age in your siggy ~ she's 16 today Happy Birthday Baby Girl
How on earth are you going to give her her birthday cake? Chicken & rice flavour? Straight cod was her cake. We've gave her chicken & rice Saturday morning she ferreted out the chicken & then didn't even eat it all. We got cod & chips in the evening & they all got some fish (batter removed) in Penny's case mixed with rice - fish eaten rice left!!!! This morning it was more of the fish with just a tiny bit of rice - same again. Tried straight chicken - wasn't interested. Cooked some cod this afternoon & gave that to her straight - scoffed the lot but still no chicken wanted. She was slow to eat her fish tonight, it was mixed with rice but has eaten some now. She's wanting food I think she misses her kibble. Might have a word with the vets tomorrow to see if I have to keep her on a bland diet until Friday when she's due at the vets again. Feeding her just cod is not going to be good for her & she'll probably go off it. Aww give the birthday girl a cuddle from me please tonib <3 Cuddles given & much appreciated ebony - she's being quite cuddly at the moment
